Well lets say my hourly rate would be very poor :(( in fact I would be in debt :))
I guess a major factor would be the ground you are detecting on and how much history it has to offer.
If you found land that is rich in an abundance of finds then maybe its possible, I have never read of anyone pursuing a career in it.
Best of luck though.

Suppose you`d have to get a job with the likes of Minelab,White`s etc.involved in the developement or technical aspects of the machines and HAVE to do lots of field testing and promoting of products etc.Like the lucky lot involved with the fishing tackle.Don`t think you could realistically go out expecting to make a living out of it without sponsorship..unless you hit a massive hoard but that could take...30 years or never!

Well, that`s a bit different..how much is reasonable? You could be called out anytime,in all weather, weekends etc.witness some unpleasant stuff..all worth considering.Wonder if they phone round for a detector man and go with the cheapest..like getting a plumber in or something?I doubt it!On the plus side you could then order a new detector and put it down as expenses!Hope it all works out for you.
