Great idea and I think any building work that you pass its worth a shot at asking. Enjoy your detecting hols.
Its better out of the ground and in your hand for the history or monetary value rather than left in the ground to rot doing nothing for anyone.

Both sound good & it's a great idea that I would also recommend. I've been doing likewise for many years - initially with bottle digging but now I've started detecting, with this as well.

I never miss an opportunity to ask about searching for bottles whenever I see a site up for development, or indeed a JCB working.

And on Friday I got 'short term permission' to detect a plot of land that's just been bought by the Water Company so they can build extensions to one of their sites, it's less than an acre but was part of a ridge and furrow field on the edge of a village and right alongside a footpath :D

Had a go at this yesterday, bit disappointing I'm afraid. Anywhere close to the old sewage works boundary was no go due to the phenomenal amount of rubbish in the ground, as was to be expected - in years gone by any grit entering the works would've been dug out and scattered - this would include any old bits of metal - foil, ring pulls, razor blades, you name it.

Close to the new pallisade fence was tricky, too, due to the large numbers of nuts & bolts left by the fencing contractors.

Only finds of note were a dog tag (?) - pretty much indecipherable, and a George III halfpenny - again, barely discernible, but our oldest one yet.

What is it about George III halfpennies - my lad & I have only found five pre-decimals yet, and four of them have been George III halfpennies. Are they really that common, or is this just an amazing coincidence? :D
