Beach finds first time out with Sov GT

Postby oliver » Wed Jul 11, 2012 3:23 pm

Had a morning at my local beach with my new Minelab Sov Gt had to use with sling as my shoulder is still sore.Hunted in reverse discrimination on the wet sand only dug good tones in among the iron nails and other iron targets.Had the gold ring at around 12 inches gave a very faint signal butt came in on disc no problem.Checked all iron signals out in disc but did not search in disc i find this a lot better on the beach. Total finds were 30 coins 1 fishing lure,keyhole,dog tag,junk brooch,9ct Gold ring. ::g

Hi i had on auto and full volume, iron mask on and in fixed GB after i had GB in track. Did not search in disc but checked all signals in disc most finds came from a good depth and were faint signals in the AM mode but loud in the disc mode. I never search in disc on the beach. ::g

Hi Oliver,
the sov is a different beast, unlike most detectors it is deeper in disc mode rather than all metal ::g
plus you do not need to ground ballance in disc mode,settings as normal,
notch=0
disc=0
vol= max
thresh= just audioble
keep the sense in auto till youve got used to the tones, then set at 12,oclock to begin with, then ajust till you get a stable threshold.
switches
iron mask on
track/ fix/ pinpoint switch can be left in pinpoint as this switch only works in all metal mode, (disc mode dissables it)
once you get abit more time served with it come out of auto and use manual sense at around 120clock setting you will be digging alot deeper than 12"inches!
check findsmall forum out for sovereign tips ::g
good luck, chris

Thanks Chris for the feedback have you ever fitted rubbers over the toggle switches as they look very prone to getting sand in them.I have ordered a set fleebay.

Hi Oliver,

Some good finds you got there. ::g
Chris D is right about the settings. I would run it at the 12 o clock position too or even furtHer anti clockwise if you are on land that isnt too heavily mineralised. You'll find that the auto sens doesn't really push the envelope depth wise in most situations in comparison. Good to see you are getting on well with it though, they are a fantastic beach machine. :)

I have fitted the rubber toggle boots on mine, very good job and stops you having to get a new switch put on from Minelab after it gets clogged with sand. ::g

Hi, oliver,
yes i bought some of the same guy (flea bay),
you will have to take the nuts of the switches to fit them, use a socket, then gently fit the rubber boots over the switch, and tighten down carefully, dont over do tightening up the boots as this could move the switch, peice of cake ::g

Thank's i was glad i asked as i have never fitted them my self before i used to have a Sov XL years back and that had one switch and that packed up and i had to fit a new one.You would think Minelab would fit a better switch than they do with a cover over them as these machines are used on the beach mostly.

yes quite agree with you on the switch front, but then again minelab wouldnt be able to charge you 70.00 for a replacement switch ;)
heres a photo of my bad boy in land mode (with the 12x10 sef) and pro pointer on the side ::g

yep alot better ballanced than the s type shaft, the plastic handles on them are crap,( they keep breaking where the screws are mounted) so instead of paying 30.00 for one i used a handle bar end 3.50 of a certain auction site, plus you get a spare ;) i will soon be building a lightweight shaft for the 15x12 sef water rig, im considering using a carbon fibre rod, check findsmall forum out what the yanks dont know bout the sovs aint worth knowing, plus theres some wicked custom sovereigns on there too,
