A couple more Silvers and Brooch.

Postby English Bob. » Tue Jul 03, 2012 9:36 pm

Hi Everyone.

I've got myself a real cracker of a field here, fist bit of Pasture I've detected on and I gotta say it's blowing the Fields out the water! (and I got some pretty decent fields).
I said in another post that I knew it had a fair on in recent times and after the amount of 1800s Vickys coming off it (about 50 so far, there coming up everyday) and a few George the 3rds and 2nds, I thought a fair or something like one must have been on there at least 100 years ago probably more.

Well Sunday I popped down there for about 3 hours and dug another Silver Sixpence (1911 George the 6th) and a nice Royal Reserve Navy Button.
Of the Vickys that day a nice 1860 Farthing in pretty good condition stood out and a George 3rd Cartwheel Penny, another first for me, though not in great nick.
It has a OSBORN counter stamp on it, apparently a advertisement for a Company.

However Yesterday (Mon) I found my first William the 3rd Silver Sixpence Love Token!
I already knew what they were and thought I'd maybe get one down there but after reading a little more about them last night, read "they seem particularly prolific where fairs were held. In the past, fairs or similar events of this type were the only occasions when large numbers of people collected together, and perhaps the only chance in country areas for young people to meet".

So I think there's now a good possibility that a Fair was held there as much as 300 years ago!
I also worked out that a badly worn Bronze I found a few days ago, that I think is George 2nd and has initials stamped or carved into it is more than likely another Love Token from the 18th Century, also probably given at the Fair.
I hadn't heard of this type of Love Token before until i read about them last night.

Last but not least I found this lovely little Medieval Annular Brooch/Buckle (13-14 Century).
It's pretty plain but compete with working Pin, and a raised Rectangular decoration on the Pin, I read it was to hold the fabric in place.
I really wanted one of these so it's another off my list and I'm well chuffed.
It also pushes back the time for potential older finds by another few Hundred years!

Still lots to do and I'm down there as much as I can be, it's almost like I'm expecting to come back with something, it's gonna spoil me for when the Fields are cut lol.

Oh and i just wanted to put these couple of Georges I found the other day up again because the last pics i posted wasn't very clear.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I wrote this earlier before I went for out again for another 3 hours and I've just got back with another 5 Silvers! One of them a Hammered! first from this site, only my second over all.
I'll post them up tomorrow because of the 3 pic rule.

HH all.
