I honestly have not got one but really do need to get one asap.
When trying to pin point smaller items it can be so hard to find them :(
Would just take a few seconds with a prob B-)
I would really love to have the Garrett prob but at £80+ just done think I can warrent it :-/
Cheers

I have the cheapest probe ever.
when I dig a plug I set MD beside me and brake off bits of soil(handfull) and swing it over search coil until I get a tone then split that handfull of soil between two hands and swing it over search coil to check what hand its in and so on until you have very small bit of soil in your hand so you can see the object.
never took me more then 5 seconds to recover an object from plug/hole.
dont waste your money on probe it will take you longer to withdraw it , turn it on etc.
I think its pointless.
I may not be right but think again before you buy it. :)

and I'm only a newbie in MD so I need more practice. 8->

ps . only looked at last post date.
but it might be usefull for others

I dont use one but if i did it would be the garrett, cant justify the price when i have hands and a metal detector to pin point metal.

I think there great and save me a lot of time. Sometimes if my hole isn't quite in line with the object I am digging for the pinpointer will find it in the side wall. Either that, or maybe some of you guys dig a 12" hole and catch everything? =))

i dug only a couple of hundreds plugs and the biggest was about three inches in diameter only because it was a silver serving spoon at about eight inches down. maybe its to do with proper pinpointing b4 digging.
answer is buy a pinpointer if you think you need one.
As I dont have to much expirence in MD I cannot advice to much.
but I dont think I'll ever need a pinpointer.
happy digging.

I must admit I am impressed Sado if you haven't had to dig a hole larger than 3" diameter. And going down 8 inches deep was pretty good.

My holes average about 6" in diameter so I am obviously more crap than I thought. =))

Maybe if i ever have a chance to detect a field i wouldnt worry about a size of hole , but so far I was detecting in parks only so I was trying not to make a mess at all.
in fact one day a ranger from NIEA asked me about what I was doing.
I explained and asked if he wants to see my technique of digging holes.
and you wanna see his face when we walked over area i was digging for last two days and couldnt find a single trace of my plugs. :-O

also I use a cloth lying next to hole to collect any dirt from it.
