heres something i found when working on demolition at the old lucknow barracks tidworth about ten years ago.as the machine pulled a wall over i saw this bottle drop into the brick pile.it was some time late that i cleaned of some of the old mortar of the bottle that i noticed a rolled up piece of brown paper inside.on the paper is written.best wishes for the end on the job on the longest day of the year and date june 21st 1905.it has three names also written on it and that they were carpenters from newcastle upon tyne.

Hmmm thats interesting. I too have left two "messages" myself for whoever finds them in the future. The first was as a 15 yr old circa 1969. I buried a bottle with my details in, in my sisters garden, about two feet deep, oddly enough next to the fields where I now detect, on the outskirts of a place called Codsall nr Wolverhampton. I often wonder if it was ever dug up.The second one I did was when I was on a few weeks medical training whilst I was in the Army, I was just coming 18. I was based at Kandahar Brks TIDWORTH!

Anyway, I wrote the usual stuff except I added Regt, No etc. Rollled up the paper and pushed it into the vent in the wall above my bed where it fell into the cavity.

Fast forward to about 6 years ago. Local paper was asking if anyone had ever done the above. To cut it short, my photo appeared in the local press where I was branded a serial time capsuller !!!

quite a few of the builders i deal with still do that when they are refurbing old properties. piece of paper with the lads' names and dates of birth, a few coins and receipts from the job etc all sealed in a bottle or tin and hidden in a wall partition

A fascinating story, but what were the names? I would want to try and find their descendants :D
