Who like's it slow n low ?

Postby gaz1969 » Mon May 16, 2011 8:50 pm

Just wondered how anyone finds the slow and slow program for the explorer/etrac?

Fancy trying it if it gets me the small deep stuff :)

No doubt its a good program, but you will need volume control on your headphones and i advise taking regular breaks where you take your headphones off....
If you dont and do this for a long period of time you will suffer "Hearing fatigue"
This is where your brain cannot distinguish between the signals, regular short breaks will "reset" your brain to cope with it.....
I think stephenbeetleman is our hearing specialist and he may be able to back this up......
I am terrible for taking breaks and often at the end of the day my concentration listening to the sounds does suffer....

Tis true BA. When we listen to sounds over a prolonged period of time the outer hair cells of the cochlea temporarily lose their ability to make out between sounds that are very close together in frequency. In order to compensate for this to gain that extra clarity we can sometimes reach for the volume control and compensate by turning it up even more. This risks hearing loss and tinnitus so when you feel you need to do this you should instead take a short break. Its a bit like listening to the radio in the car over a long journey, as you travel along you end up increasing the volume as the journey goes on without noticing it . Then you stop the car, go into the house and come out the next morning and say jeeeze! .. that radio is a bit loud! then turn it down again! :)) Overnight your ears have reset again. In metal detecting terms they have become more sensitive again to the gold staters and the deep silver again. B-)

My hearing got slightly buggered during my army days, not exactly practical to wear ear defenders in combat.....but thus far I'm not finding too many problems distinguishing tones [:)

Pardon? :) I sort of assume I'm hearing everything, but I know. I have hearing loss is certain frequencies, so I could be missing stuff.

I have tinnitus and had it since 88 when i was 18 and its never gone off since.
What caused it was listening to music through the headphones too loud just for a couple of minutes and when i took them off the sound around me was like a weird gurgling noise very hard to describe, anyway after a few seconds it went off and all was ok i thought, then the next morning when i woke up the ringing in the ears came on and has never been off since and over the years it has slightly dampened down abit because your brain trys to mask it but its still there.
I can still hear perfectly well but to describe it,its like a old kettle whats boiling over making the whistling noise but its a lot higher pitch than that but at a lower volume.
So guys and gals be careful because its so so easy to damage them and once you have damaged your ears theres no going back and theres no cure for it.

I think the most important thing i was trying to get across with this thread is not ongoing hearing problems that people are dealing with, but more to do with something called "Hearing Fatigue"
This is something that can affect anyone no matter what condition their hearing is...
Basicaly, and i am one of the worst culprits, it is not taking regular breaks when detecting.

The "slow and low" program the original poster has mentioned can be very very noisy and prolonged exposure to this constant noise will cause hearing fatigue.
Its not dangerous as such, but will cause you to miss potentialy good targets....

Thanks to BA and SBM for the advice regards to protecting your hearing. But am I missing something here, I thought 'slow and low' for the E-Trac was keeping the coil near the ground to improve depth, and moving it slowly to compensate for the E-Trac slow recovery time.
Or is there a special Low and Slow Program :-/

Thanks gaz. I find that the E-Trac makes me do alot of digging, and because the headphone cord is not very long I have to take them off when I put E-Trac down to dig, I suppose this gives my ears a rest. I also keep the background threshold down so I can just about hear the background hum. :D

I don't like the sound of that BA (no pun intended) no wonder you were concerned about peoples hearing being damaged, with everything maxed up I would expect your head to get blown off if you got a good signal. :D

I'd imagine by that program, settings maxed would mean everything bar the volume. It wouldn't hurt to still adjust that to personal preference. :)
