grunts n squeeksi quite often get a signal that gives grunt for iron then a non ferrous squeek on the return sweep with the number id bouncing low to high ....i usually ignore these signals as when i do dig them find only junk with no good target anywere close ......is it foolish to ignore them completely ...what causes them

Re: grunts n squeeksHi,
Usually it is a flat iron surface that cause the high pitch squeels but they are not the same as a good quality silver signal. However I did find a lot of good finds by digging such signals sometimes the iron is big and can confuse the signal of the silver hammie next to it. So mostly I dig them unless the pinpointer tell me it is a huge piece of metal. TC When in Doubt Dig.

Re: grunts n squeeksI had a signal like this on Monday and I ended up digging a hole about 18 inches deep and found a large length of cast iron pipe at the bottom of it. It was about 3 yards away from where I found a silver shilling so didn't want to give up. In the end I kept widening the hole in case there was something good in the walls of it, but didn't find anything and my back was killing me. Reluctantly filled the hole in (was such a big hole by the end I had the soil in a wheelbarrow), but still wondering if I missed something good in there.
I was getting a squeak and a 75 then a grunt and 34-39 the other way. Having started with a non-motion detector I do worry that I'm not pinpointing properly and missing goodies. My silver shilling was slightly to the right of where I was digging (only by a couple of centimetres though).
Re: grunts n squeeksThe squeak will happen with pretty much any detector...
It is "usualy" caused by large iron, especialy horseshoes or long pointed nails.... With the older machines and quite probably still applys to the newer machines you can rotate around the target by 360 degrees, sweeping as you go, you will often find the grunts outway the squeaks, indicating a large ferrous item. The hotter you run the machine the worse the problem becomes.....High sensitivity will increase the virtual size of your coil and drag in targets from outside its physical diameter..... High sensitivity often creates the high squeaks.... And the Tenetics range of machines are pretty sensitive already..... You will often find that by rotating around the target you will get to a point where it only signals iron. If you are still unsure then slow the swing right down and try and see if you can get a 2 way good signal anywhere around the area. Sometimes digging a spadefull of earth out will define the signal to just iron... You have to imagine that a large % of our finds are next to iron, or above and below iron, not just big chunks of iron either, flakes of rust or smelting waste will all cause good targets to be masked and remain in the ground...... This is where a slow swing speed will allow the machine to recover quick enough to see the good target. Obviously we miss a lot of targets with all our machines because of iron masking them... Nature of the hobby..... When you are right no one remembers; when you are wrong no one forgets
Re: grunts n squeeks
*facepalm* I've just fell in - the pinpointer was telling me my target was huge, I assumed it was going mental because it wasn't working properly or I hadn't ground cancelled it right or whatever.....doh. Thanks. Thanks also blackadder, V. useful.
Re: grunts n squeeksthanks all for your response ....i will pay more attention to them using those tips....
