HI Leepy welcome to the forum here, the Garrett Ace is a great little detector as i still use it as a back-up machine having progressed to a minelab explorer II which is a serious bit of kit in my eyes but i'm still learning the machine maybe in another year i'll know it's full potential?

What settings do you run on the Garrett? I found the best setting to be in custom knocking off the first 2 settings and the last one, if you do get a signal which bounces from the first to third setting DIG it! (as this is usually a sign of hammie)

The lead item with crossed keys is likely to be a post-medieval bale seal.

I'm trying to research the 5p sized coin!!
>Couple of hours later: Can't find a British coin with the word 'rules' on it. :(
Sorry...

No problem mate i followed the advice which was the same as i gave you which was given freely by a fellow detectorist, later in the day i had found my first two hammered coins. The reason for taking the last section off in the custom mode is to avoid digging hot rocks (high end coke), if you don't believe me try it and see as other Garrett users will inform you that Garrett's love coke.

Good luck in your hunt and lets see some of your finds posted here.

Andi

I have found the same thing with coke, it just loves it =))

Do you have many areas around York that you can freely detect or has the law clamped down due to it's historical reputation?

Hi Ian detecting in or near York is a little hard for me as i'm a member of the York & District Metal Detecting Club and one of their rules is that you cannot detect on any farms that the club uses or have permission to detect on. Detecting within the City of York is a definate no-no and the council do not allow detecting on any open land or parks so i have to head on out into the countryside. I have permission to detect on a friends farm which upto now i have only tried three fields as the rest are all cropped up at the moment, he has about 14 fields that i can get on when he hasn't got any crops in them, the fields i have tried have had the odd coin on them but as is the norm they are full of buttons and shotgun caps.
However i have just acquired permission to detect on another farm which is further out of York which has just under 300 Acres of land but i have to wait a couple of weeks for the farmer to sort some fields out for me to detect on, i hope that this farm will give me some good finds in the future.

Andy
Great news on the new farm. I have applied to 10 local farms so far and got 2 replies back saying NO, and nothing from the others.
I am really struggling to find anywhere to detect as one f the most promising areas around me is S.S.S.I. due to the finds etc. :(

What a bummer.
