New club in Somerset.

Postby the-roman » Sun Jan 15, 2017 5:58 pm

A new club is created with old friends who are second to non. Our club members are what metal detecting is all about, comradery, freedom of speech, love of the hobby, fairness and respect for other people and their opinions. Good honest and open discussion is what a good club is all about. Many of our members have helped on recovery missions finding lost rings etc for people.
We had our first club dig today and although there was not much in the way of finds, it was a great success. New club badges were handed out, a raffle was held to pass on those unwanted xmas prezzies and a good old chin wag to start the day off. As we already knew each other the conversations were flowing effortlessly with plenty of good cheer and humour.
The club is not run by a single person, it is run by all club members with each and every one having a positive input and all helping out as and when they can. A truly fantastic bunch who would make a welcome asset to any club.
And what have we called ourselves and how did we arrive at the name? well, everyone put forward a name for the club and a poll was started. It got down to the final three names with the most votes going to the final name. As we are based in Somerset, and Somerset is the old Saxon kingdom of Wessex, the final name for the club was created.
We welcome you all to the Wessex Searchers MDC….
We will be holding our own club digs but will also attend other open digs and rallies on occasions so we will all look forward to meeting up with friends both old and new.
Cheers one and all and Happy Hunting. ::g

Hi GL&HH, luckily all our club members have known eachother for around 5 years so this was easy to set up for us. we wish you all the best with your club and hope you get up and running soon. ::g

All the very best to your new club. I helped start up a club 16 months ago and it has been a really good success. We have monthly Club Digs and this weekend raised £500 for charity.
There will be ups and downs but if you have a good core of solid members who are happy to work hard and really enjoy the detecting, then the future is bright.
I love the word Wessex, has so much history attached, Liam OooO

Thankyou Liam, ::g
Yes we have an amazing core of not just fellow detectorists, but very good friends who have all mucked in one way or another, and as there is no single person running the club it has become a joint effort where everyone has a right to speak up and cast votes on various aspects of how the club will be run and which direction we are going in. ::g it actually works very well. ::g

I can't wait for the next club dig already. Sunday was a great success and it's down to the ethos of the club. Freedom of speech and the desire to create an at ease atmosphere with the hope of unearthing some nice finds together as a club. Roll on 2017!!!

We are doing great so far and moving in the right direction what with future digs in the pipe line and of course great comradery, and it's not costing us the earth due to reasonable dig fees, looking to the future as I'm sure it can only get better. ::g

I have to say its working well I was surprised how well its taken off due to the short time the club has been running but as you say most of the members are long term detectorist and have been on other digs/clubs I hope to have a long membership of this club and look ahead to great digs and good company ::g ::g
