finding lost ring

Postby bantryman » Fri Jul 06, 2012 9:54 pm

hi everyone,
i'd be so grateful if you have any suggestions to help me with a problem .i was asked by a friend if i could find a platinum ring that he lost on a sports field ::g .i've never found anything made of platinum before so i was eager to start but hit trouble straightaway.i'm getting a strong signal every few inches,it's usually a ringpull, pre decimal coin, bottle top or football stud ;;z .i'm using my trusty fisher 1266 with discrim 1 set at 3 and discrim 2 set at 6.anyway yesterday was my third crack at finding it and i've got blisrers on blisters!! :(( .i'm having to dig about 120 items everytime,i'm frightened of turning up discrim too high in case i knock out the ring.any advice would be much appreciated.
many thanks
chris

I agree :D

God knows what you may pull up? but the law of averages states something decent will come up sooner or later, whether it be the ring or another goodie...........at least you have somewere to detect on ::g and i wouldnt discrim anything as you may lose stuff

just keep detecting the field with not to discrim and take what other finds come along ,are you only allow to detect until you find the ring

Hi bantryman, if its only just been lost it should be on or very near the surface so discount any deep signals, this should help with the blisters. :) Good luck.

Just a thought but nobody's really mentioned the permission thing. Now I know if somebody had lost something in a very specific area it would normally be assumed to be OK to have a quick scan and probably find it, but in this case it sounds like a more intensive search is called for on what is probably a fairly heavily contaminated sports field - not an insignificant area - and may involve a bit of digging.

I somehow think you shouldn't be doing this without the express permission of the landowner, though I'm sure if the circumstances were explained this shouldn't be a problem :D

Turn your sensitivity right down maybe almost to zero experiment as too see that you only pick up surface finds, thats what i would try. Just had a try on my cscope on a ring pull i got the sensitivity down to 1 and it was just picking it up at about 2 inches ive set the disc to blank from o to 10 and its reduce it to about a 1inch of the surface. maybe if you take a screwdriver and just scratch the surface too see whats there.if you have a pro pointer desensitize it so that only picks up on the surface that would make it easier still
