Minelab E-Trac - Recovery Deep Setting

Hello all, some info below from the minelab blog about the use of the setting Recovery Deep


Recovery Deep in depth
The Recovery Deep setting on the E-TRAC, Explorer and Explorer SE detectors is designed to enhance the detection and identification of deep targets. This article will explain the way in which deep recovery mode enhances the operation of the detector and points out those situations when you may not choose to use this setting.

When Recovery Deep is turned on, it only has an effect on weak signals, stronger signals remain completely unaffected. When Recovery Deep is turned on and a weak signal is detected, the identification signals undergo stronger filtering to smooth out the data. This leads to more stable and consistent Ferrous and Conductivity values. Given this, it may seem that as Recovery Deep could be turned on all of the time. Unfortunately, as in all things, there can be too much of a good thing. There are two situations when the Recovery Deep setting is undesirable.

In the case of weak, shallow targets, the stronger filtering of the Recovery Deep setting will cause the strength of these short, sharp signals to be decreased. The grid below shows the effect of Recovery Deep and these different classes of target.

Also as a result of the stronger filter, signals from weak targets become smoothed. In environments with multiple deep targets relatively close together this smoothing may make adjacent targets start to appear to be merged. In this case the ID that the detector displays may become mixed between the two targets.

In summary, the Recovery Deep setting should be used in situations where you are expecting to find sparse, large, deep targets and in these situations you will experience more stable and consistent IDs.

interesting....its a shame that they named the setting "Recovery deep" as it conjures up a setting that will spirit deep targets out of the ground....
Certainly interesting about the shallow targets possibly being missed because of the extra filtering that recovery deep does.....
Broken rings falls into this category......because the round band is broken, most detectors will struggle to find these with a diggable signal........so to decrease the signal even more is not desireable

I have been running recovery deep "off" all the time i have been using the Etrac......but i have increased the "Volume Gain" to max (this is not the volume setting for your headphone loudness)
From my research and messing about with it the volume gain "should" give a boost to the sound of very deep faint targets.....

I think with your beach detecting you will be running recovery deep off then?


This is taken from the manual about the volume gain..
Volume Gain
Range: 1–30
Factory Preset: 24
The Volume Gain controls the amplification of a target’s audio response, relative to the target signal strength. The Volume Gain control is the Audio setting that is most similar to volume adjustments in other devices (e.g. radio or television
volume controls).

With a setting of 1 the target signal will not be amplified. Weak target signals will sound quiet, medium target signals will sound mid-range and strong target signals will sound loud. There will be greater differentiation between target signal strengths, however, weak signals will be harder to hear.

With a setting of 15, the audio response will be partially amplified. Weak to medium strength signals will sound louder, but strong signals will not sound much louder than medium signals as the volume reaches the Volume Limit.

With a setting of 30, all target signals will be amplified to a loud audio response. At this setting there will be less differentiation between medium and strong signals, but weak target signals will be easier to hear.

I think with your beach detecting you will be running recovery deep off then?
To be honest I have been using volume gain at 24 and running recovery deep on.

I have been over ground which has already been heavily detected before and finding much they did not find... the other day I found 9 highly corroded £1 coins, all very deep, around the ft and half mark :-O , I understand the £1 coin is a thick coin etc and not a small hammy :))
The e-trac does work very well on the beach and wet sand does not phase it at all B-) in fact my true test was an estuary that was salty mud, I tried to use a couple of detectors I owned prior to this machine which had no chance what so ever, false signals being given off left right and centre:-O . That`s actually why I initially purchased the e-trac in the first place.

Its like a trade off i suppose.....on the beach you are more likely to find small gold and silver jewelery finds and if they are broken then you struggle to get a diggable response with most machines......
With recovery deep on then the filters are going to reduce the signal sound of a small find close to the surface or a potentialy weak signal anyway....
Having recovery deep off i personaly dont think will change your abilty to find £1 coins at 9"+.....
And pushing the volume gain to 30 has no real effect to you except that weak deep signals will sound like banging under the surface signals.......so your depth meter comes into play here....

I would be inclined to take a couple of very thin womans gold and silver items.....attach something like dental floss to them and place them about 4" into the sand....

Then fiddle with the settings to see how it responds....

If you have a broken ring i would definately take that......

I just asked my wife this and she laughed her head off then gave me the death stare =)) =))

Dont forget to attach something to them...they will sink and then you will be sleeping in the shed....

Thanks for the info mrix, I have been using deep mode on, but my site has a gravel layer about 8 inches down, not been a problem in the summer but now with wetter ground I have been getting lots of false readings, I have reduced the sensitivity to no avail, will try turning the deep mode off next time out

Dave what sensitivity have you been running at?
Presume you are in manual mode...
Have you tryed auto +3?
Basicaly you are boosting the actual sensitivity the machine senses by 3 extra clicks....
one of my farms on auto plus 3 will only hit 19.....so i run manual and can get to 25 without to much falsing...
My other farm hits 30/31 on auto +3.....I know the max is 30 but obviously having +3 clicks it above that and the etrac will register it.....
Also make sure the coil cover is clean and not condensated, this will cause some falsing and erratic behaviour....

Thanks for the info Bruce, setting is slightly different on the Explorer, I have always run it in auto mode but have reduced the sensitivity number down to 20, but the grass is very long and my coil gets soaked, so perhaps this is not helping as you suggested. Detecting in the wet is a bit new to me, think I will need to try a few different setting on this site

Ahh ok dave....i'm not to familiar with the explorer...
Maybe make a post in the explorer forum for some ideas.....
Wet ground will help with deeper targets......
A large coil will produce some falsing with a high sensitivity setting...it is detecting outside of its area the more you increase the sensitivity....
Bit of messing around should give you an idea of how high your land will allow....

How does the explorer ground balance?
Is it auto, if so fine.....if its manual then you need to get this down to a fine art......ground balancing is so important and affects depth capabilites and will cause falsing if not done accurately....

Re-Ground balancing, did try that but it didn't make any difference, but on another site with overhead power lines it made a massive difference. Thanks for the advice, will try a few different settings next time out, and to make matters worse with those false signals the ground was hard work today lol, very sticky mud, and I got it everywhere ! Sorry going off topic now

just had to ask about the recovery deep question!

I have been using r- deep all the time, i thought it was to find smaller objects, no matter the depth?

Would the finds increase over a field i think i have exhausted by taking it off?

Plus the would the smooth setting effect it in any way?
