Ultrasonic Cleaning

Postby daviskites on Fri Dec 26, 2008 8:08 am

hello all,

I wanted to let you know that I purchased an ultrasonic cleaner for my father for Christmas. It is a fabulous addition to his metal detecting equipment. We placed a seemingly useless piece of metal into the cleaning bath. We just used hot water and a little washing up liquid, and immediately the find started to give off the misty soil residues that were caught in all of the cracks. After a couple of minutes we were able to discern that the find was an amulet of some kind in the shape of a wild bore.

The cleaner we used can be seen here - and purchased for a small investment from Amazon.co.uk

You can purchase special cleaning fluid to use with this device, but I wouldn't recommend using this as it can be quite harsh, and warm water is just fine to get results without damaging any potential find. I would also warn you not to clean anything by this method that contains cracks, as the ultrasonic action can damage the item.

Anyway - I hope you foud this useful.

Kind Regards

I bought one of these and a bottle of the U/sonic cleaning fluid which is
quite a 'green' product totally biodegradable and made from extracts of
seaweed. Does bring coins up well and doesn't seem to 'etch' them in any way
like a caustic or acidic cleaner would.
I cleaned a silver ring with black sapphires with just a drop of washing-up liquid
and it came up fine. Gave it a bit of a polish with a microfibre cloth, lovely!
So based on my very limited experience I would recommend it.
