It's a pity detectorists weren't allowed on the site before the Archies! The stuff of dreams.
As with any hoard, it's always intriguing to speculate why they were never retrieved - like squirrels who can't remember where they buried their nuts, owner died, proceeds of crime never recovered, etc....

It would seem the hoard came from a chance placement ditch section or was it perhaps located by a detector first and then the slot was excavated.

Got to agree Mr Leg end ..that was my thoughts on first seeing this.Leg end wrote: Tue Jan 07, 2025 3:52 pm That 'cloth' looks very much like lead to me! Great find though, look forward to seeing it on Digging for Britain.

I agree. Despite the word "cloth" being used three times in the linked BBC article (once in the first photo caption, and twice in the article text), the wrapping certainly resembles a sheet of lead.

If you watched it they said it was lead looks like the folk captioning were only looking at the picturesManOnTheMoon wrote: Wed Jan 08, 2025 9:27 am I agree. Yes...watched it last night and as LuckyB as stated ...it definitely was lead.
Very interesting and full of near mint Hammies, some of which were quite special.
Looking forward to tonight's episode.

Nope, I haven't watched it yet, but I am pleased my instinct was correct.LuckyB wrote: Wed Jan 08, 2025 9:38 am If you watched it they said it was lead looks like the folk captioning were only looking at the pictures
I also see that the article has been corrected since I last looked this morning, with references to 'cloth' replaced with 'lead'!
