I'm 42, and only recently started detecting. Was a bit self-conscious at first, particularly when I told my brother and he laughed his head of and now calls me Roy Cropper from Coronation Street....gotta laugh. C'mon, it is a bit geeky, we must look like nutters wandering around the fields!

At school whenever i bring up the topic of metal detecting, i find a load of people sniggering to themselves and calling my a 'sado' and plenty other names which i cant be assed to list on here. they give me a short lecture on how i should 'get real' and make some use of my life and how they look at metal detecting as wandering around a field with a stick that goes 'beep beep'. Oh and not forgetting the 'YOU SPEND £1250 ON A METAL DETECTOR WHEN YOU COULD GET ONE JUST AS GOOD FOR £12.50' etc etc ... ah well
And p.s. does a detector exist that costs £12.50

I like the fact that it's a nerdy hobby At the end of the day we're enjoying ourselves so that's all that matters

Yeh man!! How cool
I live for nerdy! Anything not common is cool to me.
Two of my neighbors came over for surprise visit today and asked if I was prospecting for gold!
I told them I'll open up a hardware store soon to sell nails to them...

I think the term "Nerdy" would be doing us a favour I think the term Anorak is the right one, the general public believe when we go home, we put on our cardigans and slippers and sit down to the lovely meal our mothers have cooked us, because don't forget, they think we all still live with our mothers lol
A sobering statistic is.....there are 3 times as many bell ringers than there are detectorists, so remember bell ringing is main stream lol.............................Anybody fancy a hot date with a bell ringer?..........No, it doesn't sound quite right does it?

Of course it gets seen as a nerdy hobby, especially for the younger you are.
When my mates found out I was metal detecting on Sundays instead of going to the bar with them to watch the match,I took loads of abuse

Hope 2013 strikes another couple off my wish list.

To be honest, i love the fact that most people view it as an undesirable thing to do.. less people detecting, more treasure left for us to find! i think its a conspiracy, if only everyone knew how fullfilling and addictive detecting is, they would all be doing it... lets keep allowing everyone to think its nerdy, suits me fine B-)
