Think I got lucky?

Post by Baffles »

New to the hobby and not even got my detector yet.

Today I called in at 2 farms. First one told me no but the second one had no issues with me detecting and is happy to fill in a form saying so.

It's not a huge plot of land but I'm just happy I have it!

I'm looking at using the NCMD search agreement form (paid member) but curious what others aim for when filling out the "% of the value" and "over the value of".

My advice would be discuss it with the farmer, mine just said he'd be happy to split anything really valuable 50/50 but he was more interested in finding out about his land. Show them all your finds, see if they want to keep any of the smaller stuff for themselves. It's better to sacrifice a coin or two here and there to maintain a good relationship, word of mouth amongst farmers could take you a long way. The chances of finding anything so valuable it would become an issue are very small.

Secured the permission today! Paperwork is signed! Confirmed a 50/50 split on any treasure finds.

Went out for a few hours on the land and found a number of iron things. Nuts, bolts, tent pegs and a few bits of copper cable. I dug almost every signal since I'm new ::g

The weather was amazing too so all in all a great day was had!!

Mmmm ok not to be a pain " on any treasure finds" could cause a problem x;

eg Single coin not classed as treasure...

one single coin was valued recently at £100,000 and then went on to sell at auction at £550,000.

But good on you :D I try and have a figure, that way I'm covered my agreements now range from £200 up to £1000, 50/50 share.

Just called in on another farm today and landed another permission!

150 acres of grazing land.

He said others have been on the land before, but the last detectorist left after one day and never came back. Seems odd.

So far 2 out of 6 farmers have said yes when approaching them directly. Never had a response to any of the e-mails or letters I sent out.

If you've dug 50+ shotgun caps by the end of your first day, you'll know why. No persistence, some folk :)

Well done, Its a brilliant feeling going on your own permission for the first time.

Just remember the finds aren't going anywhere so pace yourself, its a marathon not a sprint 98;

So of the two fields I have been on so far one has turned up a few coins, unfortunately in poor condition, and the next was just turning up iron.

I think some of the land has been picked clean by the look of it, or I just had a bad day on the second field x;

All in all, just glad to be out and detecting ::g

Well done to you, permission no.1 is a cool feeling & now you've got two ! ::g
I've got five now without much effort but they're all well landed clients I've known for some years.
From experience, UK farmers can be a funny bunch & I'd be surprised if many people get much success from letters & emails.
Personally, I'd want to see if your eyes were too close together if it was my land :))
Rolling about naked in mud will give the wrong impression.

Great news, go slow .
Remember it’s your land so no panic in getting to the other side of the field fast as possible .

I've always found once you have the first permissions the rest come a lot easier, go to the next farm and using the first name of the land owner tell them you've been detecting at Daves farm for some time and ask permission to detect there land and so on, i've been detecting at Dave and Steve's... because all the farmers in a large area know each other.
