First permission - question

Post by jezperrott » Tue Aug 07, 2018 9:42 pm

I've just got a 25 acre permission. About 20 acres of pasture, including a riverbank, and about 5 of light woodland. The village is in the Domesday book and has a good medieval history.

My question is this. The river has a strong meander in it where the rest of the river is relatively straight.

Hopefully you can see the picture. What do you think may have been the reason for this, assuming it's NOT a natural feature? Fishery? Simply a wallow for cattle? I'd appreciate any insight.

Clearly, the site of the footbridge (no longer there) will be where I start. What do you think the notch in the riverbank at the top is? Just a dock?

I guess the meander is natural but the cut out isn't. Maybe there was some trading, finds will tell. Sounds an interesting site. ::g

Yes, that was my first reaction, but the meander doesn't look natural on site and from the air. It looks like something was there, on the right side, to make it start. The river flows right to left.

That 90 degree bend looks unusual. x;

More interestingly is the sluice, this may well have fed a mill? the cutout might just be a cattle drink, or maybe an old ferry crossing point. I would search that whole are from the sluice to the footbridge, if it is meadow then finds will be deep, so low and slow. ::g

Some excellent insight here guys, thanks. Yeah, I'm gonna take my time here.

I've booked the tithe maps for tomorrow, so I'll update you on what I find.

You're right, the 90° bend is what makes me think it's man-made, along with some interesting grooves and indentations on the lidar. Something was definitely there.

The sluice, I'm not so sure about. That area floods regularly now, so I'm wondering if it was to push the water elsewhere so as to make a water meadow rather than flooding populated areas. But I guess we'll see!

I'm so excited about this area!

I'd expect that there will be some online historic reference of what went on there, can be quite tricky to discover, but often in transcribed old books.
As a suggestion - Any new permissions now I use a GPS to record my tracks and plot any relevant finds which I then transfer to Google Earth as it builds up a picture of the site over time and records where you have searched.
Please keep us informed of whatever you discover. ::g

Just noticed that you have the 400i, never had a Garrett myself but have seen many great finds from people with same machine, so don't doubt it at all. ::g

It will be an Ox Bow id imagine, best bet is to see if the soil is a different colour if you detect where the river would have gone if you imagine a straight line rather than the bend.
