Dont give up trying for permissions

Post by Karpykev »

Although new to the past-time (Oct 2024) I soon realised if i was to get our most weekends I needed 1 or 2 permission otherwise it was goIng to cost me around £100 per month to detect.

I drafted About 40 letters for local campng sites (out of season being winter), farm shops, paddocks and anyone who looked like their home had a bit of land.
Within the letter I offered to bring along a spare detector if they or family members also wanted to have a go at detecting.
I now have 2 permissions one being 3 fields totalling 26 acres and I am visiting my 2nd this Friday to meet the owner. Her land is beside a old radar staion that was bombed in the the 40s!

On only my 2nd visit to my permission i have had Edward IV half groat,a George V farthing and a lead farm token, It being located near Battle in East Sussex I am hopeful of more to come from the fields.

So dont be disheartened with no responses etc. that 1 yes may be just on its way to you.

If you apply yourself appropriately you will get something. You`ve done a bit of leg work and it`s paid off. I am sure you did`nt find it that hard. Good luck to you....... [81/]

Congratulations! I also have this very moment just been granted my first permission, following an email to a site after reading your post (I was emailing previously but it spurred me to do more).
Apparently ancient burial site but never confirmed, undetected land. The bloke has actually had 2 people ask previously but they never bothered to show!
Here's to some great finds for us 🤞🏻 HAPPY DETECTING!

Well done to both of you on your new permissions it’s by far and away the hardest part of detecting today I’ve had 2 of my permissions since the early eighties 1 about 18 months and still try to get permission that are close to my existing ones. And the best way of keeping them is to be totally honest with the landowner that’s how I got my most recent one, one farmer talking to another and then vouching for me

Thanks! Yes definitely agree, these landowners are being so kind as to allow us to use their land to enjoy our hobby, which we may otherwise not be able to do. They absolutely deserve the respect and honesty from us.

Congratulations, your hard work has paid off. If you think creatively. like you did, and keep at it, something will crop up, as it did for you.

None of our permissions are local now. Our closest is 45 minutes away, and due to it being rather unkempt pasture land, we haven't been on it since late summer last year. We're waiting for the farmer to cultivate it. Our other permission is slightly further than that even, but is two pretty massive farms in Suffolk. We're hoping that these will lead to more as both farmers are very interested.
We've had Hammered and Roman coins at both, and other objects too. At least 10 items from the two farms are now on the PAS.
We're off to Herefordshire to see my Dad soon, so we will be visiting a permission that we have down there.
In the end we gave up on our local permission, too many hours put in and too little of interest dug out.

I have learnt from my mistakes and I’m quite sure that I could repeat them exactly.

This one is around 30 mins away, which I think is okay especially if it proves fruitful. Immediately local I think I'm really going to struggle, responses seem to be swift no and that they either get asked alot or already have someone doing it. You'd think with an abundance of farmland you'd be more likely to pick out the available places but it seems to be the opposite here 😂
The permission I've been granted is actually a camping site.
