Please Help - Engine part lost in Hedge

Post by Rhodri123 » Mon May 08, 2017 5:05 pm

Help please, I live in the St Asaph area and have lost a engine component in a hedge in my garden.

The component is the size of a large Carrot and Is made of steel.

I have tried this afternoon with a small cheap detector but as it would only detect within 6" I have failed to find it.

If someone could help asap I will make it worth there while.

Please pm me asap if you can help.

Thanks in advance Rhodri

At what distance can your equipment detect the item in question ?

Depends on its size

5p size about 8"
2p size about 12"'
Paint pot size a couple of feet

Shape, size and material all affect the results.

Some grades of stainless steel springs are fairly undetectable.

Carrot of normal iron should be well over a foot. More like 2 if its laying flat

Do you think its hung up in the hedge? and if so what sort of hedge is it? and can you get to the hedge from both sides/

I'm confused about why we are discussing finding something in a hedge...

Metal detectors are for finding something buried in the ground, I fail to see the benefit, of metal detecting a hedge.

Might be being facetious :-/ here...

I am just puzzled about how an engine part that size got into the hedge :-/

Irrespective I hope that somebody can help Rhodri find it. Sorry I can not myself as too far away.

Looking forward to seeing the happy reunion... this must be one of the most intriguing requests that we have had. Good luck Koala.

Failed.

Spent a good few hours searching the hedges and trees for an injector.

Pinpointed all the ground under the hedge so fairly confident its not in there. My detector picks it up at well over a foot. Scanned both sides and top nothing. However the hedge is quite thick probably 4 foot or so. Leaving a couple of feet in the middle not checked. Tried poking the coil through as much as possible but there is an outside chance its in one of the areas I couldn't get the coil .

Shame a replacement is now ordered.

Thanks for the update Koala.. I know how frustrating it is ... but you tried, which speaks volumes in my book.

Very well done for trying Koala, shame you failed to find it, but it sounds as if by trying "hedges probably 4 foot thick and trees" that it never was going to be a simple task.

I like the comment "However the hedge is quite thick probably 4 foot or so. Leaving a couple of feet in the middle not checked. Tried poking the coil through as much as possible but there is an outside chance its in one of the areas I couldn't get the coil" as a bit back I tried finding a ring for a lady in the adjacent village and she had a good idea where she lost it when hanging up the washing which included a couple of smallish shrubs and I felt a bit of an idiot sticking the coil into the middle of them well off the ground as it could have been caught in them.

Did he explain how an engine part that size got into the hedge (or where ever it is) as it seemed a strange thing to lose in a hedge!.

i had exactly same request from a farmer cutting a hedge, one of the roller type things from either end of cutter fell off while cutting top of hedge, this too was about the size of a carrot. Obviously as it was probs in the hedge at the bottom then my detector would be no good but my pinpointer probe would which eventually found it and saved the farmer £150 and gained me a gd permission which then led to an edward 1 hammie. Happy days !! I am in wales but unfortunately too far otherwise i would help but good luck..

Injectors are tight so used the engines compression to eject them. Undone two and started the engine. One fired out and landed 5 foot away on the drive as it normally does. The other went who knows where. There's another good stretch of short cut lawn after the drive. Then bushes hedges and trees. They didn't see which way it went.

There is a angle junction on the injector. Dropped one in a bush and it did get hung up. It was also easy to find with the detector.

Ah, I just could not work out how part of an engine finished up in the hedge - but that explains it.

"They didn't see which way it went." probably because they were taking cover =))
