1st Beach double gold with Equinox 600

Post by ICENI » Mon Dec 24, 2018 6:45 pm

Had a great last outing of the year Saturday with the Nox 600 , hit double gold .

Using 15inch coil .
Settings . Beach 2 , sensitivity 19 , 2 tones , iron bias 0 , recovery speed 2 .
1st ring 9k came in at a clear 17 and 2nd ring 9k at 15 , i kept losing the signal wasn't in the hole or round the hole i was going to refill the hole in frustration then just thought i would try using pinpoint around the hole and there it was . That's my biggest concern with the nox i keep losing perfectly good clear crisp signals , does anyone have the same issue if so how have they overcome the problem ::g

Well done. ::g

The Nox large coil doesn't behave like other Minelab coils on beaches. Shallow signals tend to be no problem but deeper signals often disappear when you take out the first spit or two rather than getting stronger to indicate that it is non ferrous like other Minelab coils. Funnily enough the signal often comes back as you dig deeper. I have absolutely no idea why it does this but I did mention it the first time that I used it. It is a real test of faith digging very deep signals but, as you have found out, the pinpoint mode will usually find it. In fact the beach is virtually the only place that I regularly use pinpoint. :D

I was out this morning on the beach and was taking particular note of the very deep signals. Sure enough several of them disappeared and then reemerged from well over a foot down. Others gave a decent enough signal throughout the whole process. I don't pretend to understand it at all. ::g

hi, if the signal convinces you to dig it means there is a target to be had, so even if the signal disappears keep digging because you will find it.

it happens to me all the time with deep targets on wet sand, usually when i encounter sucking sand when my scoop creates suction under the scoop, i reckon the suction shifts the targets orientation thus making the signal disappear then reappear after the next 1 or 2 scoops, but this is just my theory.

nice finds, congrats ::g

I fully agree that the after you have a positive signal the secret is to have faith and keep digging until the target appears. ::g

My problem with the explanation is that targets at say 15 inches plus disappear when an 6 to 8 inch plug is taken out. I dig with a spade so suction and disturbance isn't really an issue. If the target had simply moved I am quite confident that with the Nox I could get any coin at eight inches whatever the orientation. Also quite often I have seen a 'disappeared' coin come out in it's original position in the compacted black sand and pebbles from the second or third plug down. Some of the American beach hunters have also commented on this anomoly but it only seems to happen with the large coil. I think that it might well be a software issue, like the coins on edge signals which was rectified long ago with a software update. :D

Two lovely gold rings you have there ICENI well done on finding those.

My take on the disappearing signals is that when you take a scoop out you have introduced a big air gap under the coil. I am a newby to the Nox but used a PI machine for many, many years on the wet and that always performed better on wet sand than in air. I was wondering if the Nox is the same.

this "phenomenon" (if you could call it that) is not exclusive to the Equinox, i had the same thing happen with my etrac and also my CTX3030, and im sure its not exclusive to ML, but its not an issue, because as i said above "if the signal convinces you to dig, it means there is a target" Just keep digging ::g

Thanks for the input. ::g

I didn't have it with the CTX. In fact one of my 'tests' to decide whether to dig an iffy signal was to take out a spit and see whether the signal improved or not. :D

'one of my 'tests' to decide whether to dig an iffy signal was to take out a spit and see whether the signal improved or not'

That's sound practice Fred ::g I also stamp the 'spot' well with my boot heel first which sometimes negates the need to dig a clod out. Particularly useful in soft ground.
Enjoy the rest of the festivities ::g Regards ss47
