Told you it was there: first gold of the year

Post by fred » Mon Jan 08, 2018 3:55 pm

Yesterday in my post I showed a fair haul of silver from one of my local beaches and whinged (surely not me :D ) about the lack of gold.

This morning I gave the area another hit and my first keeper was a small gold name brooch. It is hallmarked 9ct Birmingham but the date letter and the makers mark are damaged. It looks like it should date around 1880 to 1910, which would be consistent with most of the coinage. Over a very cold hour I also found a silver religious medal, which I initially thought was a sixpence run over by a tram, and a few more coppers .

Apparently the fill was dig out from the middle of the beach earlier in the year and a couple of the local detectorists have been pulling silver and copper out of there on and off ever since.

I then hit another beach and got my petrol money. Part of the sand has been ruined by some idiot throwing hundreds of modern foreign coins onto the beach some time in the last day or two. I recovered 40 in about quarter of an hour, all very shiny and some of them even still on the top, and called it a day. I don't know if it is the same person but this has happened several times over the past three or four years on different local beaches.

Hi,

Do you believe these foreign coins have be thrown there as a deliberate measure to annoy or stop metal detectorists? Were they all low denomination coins?

I was thinking that, it wouldn't surprise me if some people did that to mess things up.

Those are nice ::g .

Funny fellow that, the one who throws the coins. Apparently he lives near Trafalgar Square and feeds the pigeons daily, but they get frightened off with the new year celebrations, and he heads off to the beach both to escape the crowds and to compose himself during the sad absence of his feathered friends. If you look carefully there will be someone sat watching casually as you go detecting, quite cathartic for him as the coins are like the crowd, and he gets to feed his pigeons at the same time... ;)

I love digging coins. Wish I lived closer to a decent beach.

I think that it is another detectorist who doesn't like any competition. Before the foreign coins started to appear I used to occasionally find concentrations of what were very obviously redeposited metal detecting finds in the shingle. The foreign coins don't really worry me as I can always move along the beach a bit and anyway I have a friend who knows somebody who appreciates getting them.

I must admit, that was my first thought, but I refrained from writing that, as I'm rather new to the forum. :D

Very nice, Fred, and happy to see you get some of the gold stuff.

Quite why anyone would take the time and trouble to lob stuff out for another detectorist to find (and hope to annoy thereby) is quite beyond me. Probably sat sniggering behind a sand dune before going home to a microwave meal for one I should imagine. Hey ho.

Congratulations on the gold Fred ::g you make beach detecting look easy and like it’d be great fun.

For some reason I don’t fancy it but i’ve never given it a go. I’ve watched a couple of videos where the beach looked rainy, wet and cold and it put me off - thats maybe why ? =P~ rl; But I am happy to detect on wet, cold and windy fields knee deep in mud, so I don’t even make sense to myself x;

Hope your next trip out is as productive ::g
