A sword pommel would usually have a small rectangular hole right through for the tang of the blade, is your find weighted ? Is it heavy ? ::g

I think that it is probably off of a walking cane (perhaps even one with a spirit container inside), umbrella or riding crop rather than just a door knob. If it is really heavy there is a chance that it might be something more exotic like a priest. :D

Don’t know what it’s off but I can clearly see ‘R K’ between 4 & 5 o’clock.

Interesting !

Think there is a S at the top and a P to the right and can make out a RK at bottom right could be the end of the word York can’t make out much more there looks to be the remains of a tang on the inside

It seems that the cross keys is the coat of arms of York Minster (the cathedral). The city has a different coat of arms, a cross with five lions.

What an interesting find, an example of how detecting finds can unlock all sorts of history, well done on the research. I agree re the sizing of the hole if it was indeed a sword pommel, Liam ::g

Gently rubbing chalk across the top would normally show-up the wording and impressions and allow it to be easily cleaned off afterwards

I glanced at that and read 'City of York'! :D

It may also be the top of a swagger stick. ::g

I am now almost certain that it is a WW1 era swagger stick top. :D The S P each side of the shield might stand for St Peter, which is the cathedral school as well as the patron saint of the cathedral. ::g

Hi all, been a while. Lots happened in life Getting back at it.

I think this may be the Diocese of Peterborough.
This looks to me to be two crossed keys in saltire with a cross on the 4 quadrants. NS EW of the crossed keys.

Saki, I see you were away for over a month welcome back ::g Hope things are now sorted and good.

I agree that crossed keys with the cross in the quadrants looks a perfect match for the Diocese of Peterborough.
