R is for Rutus, R is for Roman, but C is for Celtic

Post by Bargeman » Tue Mar 13, 2018 6:16 pm

Oh boy what a day, I was out with the guys from LP (leisure promotions) on a dig at Kings Somborne, near Winchester, the morning was slow and nothing came to my CTX. So after lunch I swapped to my Rutus, running in fast, and sensitivity at 85. and the field just seemed to come alive, I was soon getting a few buttons, and broken buckles, as I made my way to a quiet corner away from most of the other detectorists.
Not long after this I had a very scratchy 65 and thought I had found a Hammy, but it was actually a small silver Roman, but better was to come, just 12 inches from the Roman hole I had an 86, and a lovely tone, I thought alloy can end, but when I dug out the small plug there sitting in the dirt was my first ever silver Celtic unit. And as you can see it has an elongated hole ::g Lastly I found a horse harness fitting with the letter R.

Very nice!

What was the decision to use Fast based on? Ground conditions or something else (I don't normally use Fast, but happy to try it if it'll get those results!)

Oh you lucky, lucky thing Kevin. That is one beautiful coin. I hope you bring it with you on Sunday so I can see it in the flesh so to speak. -=+:-P

That is if the forecasted snow doesn’t put an end to the dig :(

Fast is my program of choice, and always where I start, it has found me an amazing amount of silver since I have been using it, and it still punches down to eight inches ::g

I was lucky to find a celtic silver unit on one of my first ever digs a couple of years ago (hence my avatar). I doubt I'll ever find another, the way things are going.

Not a great financial value, but the thought that you're the first person to have seen or touched this coin since Jesus was (reputedly) walking the earth is priceless ..

Exactly Phil, it is not about money, it is the social history and the thrill of the find. It also looks pretty good next to the gold one too :D

The Rutus certainly delivers for you big fella, yet another item crossed off your wish list, a right little belter.
And no I don’t want to buy a CTX😂
I am off to the beach tomorrow with the trusty garret, hope to catch up soon .
