Roman fibula brooch.... (Couple of photos added)

Post by HolzHammer » Thu Nov 08, 2018 8:32 pm

Evening All,
The highlight of my day was this brooch - 7/8" deep drilled field, Herts.
It is quite wonky (...I'd like to straighten it but don't dare - any advice on that gratefully received!) Actually, I quite like the current shape ( in this state it measures about 55mm) as you get to see a lot of its features at the same time.
Anyway, I am getting to know my later Roman brooches but a bit foxed by this one - seems like a crossbow type without the arms... have they broken off? Evident signs of all over silvering too which is nice.
As always, any knowledge much appreciated.

I know not a lot about these but it’s very nice. I would leave it as is.
It’s conditional shape is it’s story, perhaps a Roman bent it a through it in a field.
You will never know how it got bent and I quite like that unknowing.
Good find.

That brooch looks just great. I wouldn't attempt straightening it as metals (particularly copper alloy) tend go brittle in the ground. ::g

It would possibly snap if you tried to straighten it as I have found to my cost in the past. :(

What a great find ::g
If it was me, I’d dare not try to straighten it for the fear of breaking such a fragile item.

Very nice find. I'd leave it as it was found, it's part of it's history.

I rather agree Jphin, but I couldn't resist.... its not very pretty all wrenched round... and Iwill try not to feel too guilty and just blame a few centuries of ploughing..!
I will put up a another photo soon I think I've done an ok job!

I gave in as it just became too tempting so did little 2 second spurts of the most gentle pressure over a day or so... so far so good its intact and looking less tortured!

Thanks Easy and Hartsman, I couldn't bare looking at like this so have very gently teased it back into just a bit of shape - don't dare play with it anymore... will post a photo.

I just had to give it a go I couldn't leave it all twisted up like that so very very gently, seconds at a time, I got a little more shape and I'm very pleased with the result I am not going to try any more and will leave it now!
All the best
