Æthelwulf Saxon penny

Post by Me and my boy » Sun May 13, 2018 4:41 pm

What a surprise this was, I went to my favourite field and it’s been seeded, so I did the headlands. I normally avoid these as they are full of can bits and modern junk- but I’m not avoiding them no more.
I found this which sounded really good and I though it was a musket ball etc, from 4” deep came this beauty covered in mud and a rusty residue, I would think a result from lying near iron.
It has a little piece missing, but I don’t care as it’s my fullest one to date. I wrapped in it tissue and put in the finds pouch. I couldn’t resist Giving it a little clean so found a puddle and dabbed it a little to get the worse off, back in the pouch and off I went. I walked up and down the line I found it on and within two feet of its find spot half an hour later I found another piece of Saxon!! Thinking I may have stumbled across a hoard and getting excited I had a thought to check if it fitted the other one. For some reason I thought the break was a different shape to the new piece, but low and behold it fits like a glove😀
If only I had been that way before the tractor had found it.
Still well chuffed
But looking in my spinks and other book I can’t work out what or who it is?!

Question two, do I glue it together? Or is it worth have professionally mended?
I’m. not going to sell it but don’t want you effect it’s long term value if one of the kids sells it when I’m gone.

Found on deus hot
Many thanks for reading

In the side without the cross could it be a face? Rotate around 90 degrees anti clockwise.

I do have a plastic one, but they seem to rattle around, feels safer in tissue.

Cheers ss47,
I saw 6 magpies the day before when I was getting out of the car to go detecting. I know 6 is gold and this is silver but it feels like gold to me, as it was right up there on my wiah list if things to find.
I don’t need a lottery ticket now, I’ve already won.

Great find Dr Allens email for you. Martin Allen <mra25@cam.ac.uk>

Dr Alenn generally won't ID without Recording
He will want to put it on the EMC, Ideally they like size, weight, pics on a white background and general provenience if possible (nearest Town etc)

I have no worries for it being recording, I would rather it was. I’ll do the measurements, weights etc and the post and email him. Cheers

Re: Saxon penny? Id’d Æthelwulf

Post by Me and my boy » Tue May 15, 2018 3:32 pm

Just had it identified by Dr Martin Allen.

Æthelwulf of Wessex, Rochester mint, moneyer Beagmund (North 592). This is type R19.1 in Rory Naismith's book The Coinage of Southern England 796-865, which records seven other coins of this type.

The obverse reads EÐEL[VV]LFRE[X] and the reverse reads +BEAGMUND.

WELL CHUFFED.
