First Hammered for ID Please

Post by shaggybfc » Wed May 16, 2018 4:32 pm

Hi all,
I have been lucky enough to have a few permissions, but I've never found anything too old or really interesting, except for 2 bronze rings which may / may not be bronze age.

I recently secured a new permission via social media, so out I went at the weekend. It's in a beautiful part of Gloucestershire with my permission fields being next to the village church and the old manor house. I had high expectations. After about an hour of searching, I'd been approached 3 times by locals, (neighbours of the farm), all stating that I'd not find anything as the fields had been detected by the ‘local lads’ for the past 30 years. I got the distinct impression this was their polite way of saying "clear-off, we don't want you near our property".
Anyway, by the end of the first day, on the pasture field in the bottom photo, I'd found 20 x 1914 - 1921 pennies, and a 1940 shilling - all at a depth of 5-6". Whoever searched the field previously hadn't done a great job! Just after the lunch break restart, I received a great 'far right' signal, on the Garrett Ace 250 - it was a nice clear 'ping'. It indicated being at a depth of 4", I though it may be modern jewellery or a Viccy silver so it had to be dug. It was a clay soil and still very wet just below the grass. I dug the hole to a depth of about 5-6 " and scanned it - the signal had gone! I moved the soil around, checked with the pin-pointer, but no, there was no signal. I was about to give up when I saw this tiny hammered coin sticking out of a small lump of clay stuck to the back of the spade.

I've done a quick google search and think it's a Charles 1, half Groat. Any other detail would be great.

This is my first hammered coin, and I'm over the moon. Hopefully more will follow :D :D
Thanks
Andi

Hello 'shaggybfc', Congratulations on what I hope is one of many more 'hammereds' to come. ::g
Your excellent looking permission shown in the photo is of a site that holds much promise. I would ignore the claim that it has been searched by many for years! All the best - Regards ss47

That’s a great find, well done mate. If the previous detectorists have missed all those old pennies then I suspect they have also missed a lot more! It sounds like a really promising location.

I spoke to the landowner about keeping the coin and he said to make him an offer. I said £10 and a pint. He bit my hand off :D
