Very rough Roman coin and salt shaker for possible ID please
Very rough Roman coin and salt shaker for possible ID please
Well, I was fired up yesterday and decided to get an hour in at the top of the villa field, which is pature and extremely dry now; however there is a copse at the top of the field which was a mediaeval terrace according to the local historical map, so I decided ti fight through the brambles to a couple of clear patches. Loads of iron bits and pieces and two decent finds.
The first being a small roman coin, the reverse of which is lacking any detail, but obverse below - anyone able to give an ID please? This was very shallow, just below the leaf litter layer so I am assuming dug up by the badgers that have a huge sett in the woods. Second signal resulted in a silver salt shaker - now how it came to be in woods on private land which according to the landowner they have seldom ventured in is a mystery! Tin foil test is positive, both inside and out, the top unscrews, and it came out of the leaf litter very clean. However there are no hallmarks, but there are marks on the base as pictured - does the arrow signify military/regimental use? If anyone has any ideas I would be grateful, and happy to return to its owner.
Cheers all.

i doubt very much if the salt pot is silver. In my day, which was about when it probably dates from, most of them were nickel silver. Unfortunately nickel silver has absolutely no silver content whatsoever.

Like the Military item.
Going with the arrow, would say a Pepper pot from 1946.
Did wonder if this was a 25 year service award, as I have seen an example marked 1970 over 1945 also SJA and military arrow.
Different find.
Well done
Dave.

I suspect it is 1971 made by SJA with a stock number of 129-1946

Cheers for that. Does nickel silver react with tin foil? We only had plastic salt shakers....

You mean the order of the pepperpot is not a real award? So I have to stop using S&P after my name?slowsweep wrote: ↑Wed Jul 11, 2018 1:55 pmthe Military never awarded personnel with condimentsDave The Slave wrote: ↑Wed Jul 11, 2018 1:47 pmLike the Military item.

Most likely made in 1971 to a contract pattern first issued in 1946.
Nickel silver is more or less inert and nonpoisonous, which is why it is so good for cooking and eating utensils.

How about this. Albert Wm.Gosnall. Saint Johns Ambulance from Mar 1946. to May 1971.
Don’t know what area you found it but it’s a pos. 25 year award for Service.
He was educated in Thurrock and is now retired aged 83 and is in charge of his family history records. (If he’s still alive). If it is an award then it is very likely to be silver.
Sorry I don’t know how to do a link on iPad.

25 year award makes sense, with the one I saw 1970 - 1945.
The arrow is normally Military, unless SJA also use it.
Hope this was your link.

Thanks Dave, link, almost. I’m not a member of linkin but managed to get into the back-ground without joining.
The mans got one heck of a story. I also saw on another site there seems to have been a connection between Saint Johns and the military. Would be nice to think it was his. Wonder how it got to where it was found. Maybe a pick-nick ?

Re: Very rough Roman coin and salt shaker for possible ID please
Still think it is military. The one on Etsy is 1972 1946 so does not tie in with the 25 years thing. I suspect the 129-1946 is a stock number, similar to a NATO stock number. The broad arrow is always stamped on military items. I have check the modern NSN and it isn't a salt shaker but it could be an old number.
There was another sold on ebay with 1970 129-1946
SJA could be a maker or could be Saint Johns Ambulance.

Re: Very rough Roman coin and salt shaker for possible ID please
Thanks everyone; the ones on Etsy are an almost exact match, and the broad arrow would certainly point to military. The location is on private land in West Dorset - and not too far from several military baes past and present. Quite how it got to the location will I guess always be a mystery - a more extensive search of the area may reveal more once the undergrowth has died down a bit.
