Saxon brooch. Plus hammies.

Post by GeoJon » Thu Oct 11, 2018 12:34 pm

It's been a while, but after leaving Norfolk and moving to the Peak District last February, I've finally had time to sort out a new permission.

There's nothing to find in these hills, so I now drive almost two hours to just south of Lincoln. Bit of a trek, but the land is good there, it's a big enough estate to last a couple of years and has lots of promise.

I think the clasp is an 8th/9th century Saxon 'Ansate' caterpillar brooch, Lots of rings and dots on it anyway. Came out of a field fifty yards from a Saxon church, three or four inches down and registering low on Deus Hot - mid-fifties from memory.

Any ideas about the hammies? I've no clue. Both typical hammie signals of mid-sixties on hot, couple of inches down.

A Roman grot also came up, but there's nowt to see on it. All in all, a good first day and well worth the four-hour round trip!

Cheers

Jon

Thanks Tony (and Dave and Brad)

The brooch literally came out of the first hole on the first field of a new permission, but I didn't put that in the post as it doesn't sound believable. It's true though - I couldn't believe it. Then it took me all day to find the rest!

Could the Roman grot be silver?, if so a couple of zaps with electrolysis might reveal some detail. :-/

It's amazing how such a very simple design, like the ansate can look so good ::g

Great finds...love me a Saxon brooch.

But I gotta say...as one who started detecting there back In the Day.......there is plenty to find in those hills if you know where to look.
