ID Challenge No.8 (06 - 09/11/18)

Post by thefiggis » Tue Nov 06, 2018 7:36 pm

OK, I know what you're thinking... figgis has lost it. Hammered coins can be difficult to ID at the best of times, but a cut quarter? Y-yup, and here's why...

Fortunately there are enough details on this quarter of the coin to fully identify it, and if a duffer like me can manage* then it should be a breeze for you lot. And any pets you might have.

It might be helpful to bear in mind that you're looking for small details and what you think you see isn't always what's there. Sometimes letters were conjoined in order to save room, for example.

ID challenge form HERE

Closes Friday, 9th November after 5pm.

Thanks and good luck ::g

VISUAL SCALE OMITTED. COIN WOULD HAVE BEEN 20MM DIAMETER

*at least I think I have

London mint (VND showing with ligated ND) Henry III VLC class 3a ( I reckon the shape of the hair curl separates it from 3b or 3c )

Blimey, you lot know your stuff, innit?

As stated in the OP, the clues are there and in case anyone who didn't get it is interested, here's how the basic information contained on the coin helped me to identify it with precious little knowledge:

OBVERSE
We can see half of an X at 9 o'clock. This will be the last letter of REX
Following that is what looks like IIP. But is it? Doesn't make sense. I know some Henry 3rd pennies had the regnal number III after REX, so what's a P doing in there? Turns out it's not a P at all. Henry III had an initial mark of a star and half moon and after searching online, similar coins show that the round of the 'P' is in fact the half moon. That leaves X followed by III. So this portion contains the final part of the legend hENRICVS REX III. So, Henry III.

REVERSE
Looks like VID, but a closer look showed a faint diagonal bar linking the 'I' and 'D' so there is in fact an N there. LVND was used for the London mint so this portion of the coin contains the VND bit, with the N and the D joined (ligated).

CLASS
Cracking site on Henry III long cross pennies here

Have a look and maybe narrow down the class for yourself ::g

Hope you got something from the challenge and thanks to all who had a stab.

I was fooled by the X, thinking it was the top of a sceptre, hence my stab at class 5f.

Hey ho, it's all good practice, so thanks thefiggis ::g

rl;

It's a pleasure to do them - it really is - and while of course it's good to get responses it's not the be all and end all. If one person learns something from them (and that one person is probably going to be me) then they achieve their purpose. ::g

Does he, bigod? First I've heard of it. Mind you, that'd explain why some days I have to put me own slippers on.
