Cannon or cast iron pipe.

Post by Me and my boy » Wed Nov 07, 2018 8:39 pm

I saw this on a job I’m working on. It’s laying right next to a stream, on the top of the bank. I’m pretty sure this is the latter but is it worth digging out.
Only had a pruning saw in my pocket for scale, but you get the idea.

I’ve not seen a pipe, old or young that thick or with a flange like that.
You wouldn’t have to dig the whole thing out to make a decision. Just think of the historical value !
Not to mention the scrap :-O :D

I think I’m going for it. Just need to try and word it to the landowner the reason why I want to dig it out.

The internal of the flange would normally be recessed to allow butting of the next pipe, the flange would be caulked with lead if a water or gas pipe but the flange doesn't look right for that

Could be a duct or structural pipe...........or it is a canon, the flange looks cannon like

Only one way to find out...........get digging, wouldn't it be great if it is

Think I’m getting overly excited as I forgot to mention it’s next to an old bridge in a Victorian house.

Hi me and my boy,
Your fold out pruning saw looks a good size-
Which would make it a big cannon,
Football sized cannonballs x;
it’s quite thin looking from the photos?
You need to find out either way though :D
Locate the butt end-that’ll tell you everything.
I hopecit is a muckle cannon!
Would look good in the display case ::g
Cheers

Hmmm, a curious find. As it is so shallow maybe just probing the ground will determine it's length. Just how big can cannons be? :D

You’d only have to did the front end to tell. As previously mentioned, see the gauge, and the internal characteristics of the bore....
It does look like a very big cannon,,, maybe part of the Iraqi WMD super cannon.

Dig it and post the photo of you lifting it out of the hole ::g

Looks like it has a slight curve to its' length, or that may be an illusion? Worth investigating further I would say. You can do that without lifting a thing. ::g

If it's next to a stream or river it could easily be part of an old system for managing flood plains, got similar pipes near a river in a village I work in.
Though not with a cast 'lip' like yours.
Hope it is a cannon though, find of the year if it is.

hello, old cast iron water or sewer pipe, ask the land owner if any new pipe has been relaid on his field or near, or maybe across the bridge to the old house

looks too parallel without straightening bands for a cannon.

sewage/drainage pipe would be my guess.

shouldn't take more than a couple of minutes to see the bore in the end. Cannon would have to be 4" or more wall thickness.

Funny enough this one turned up on a job when putting a digger across the garden.
Not mine I might add,I would love to have found it.
It is about 4 -5 feet long and after doing a bit of research think it probably is a carronade.
No markings at all on it that I can find but there is a touch hole.
Could be a repro I suppose but could also be genuine, shame I can't buy it .

It is roughly 4-5 feet long and about four inch bore.

I really think you should post a new post of this rather than on the tail end of my old forgotten post, not that I Mind in anyway what so ever, but this really deserves it’s own fresh posting. Mine was boring, this is exciting.

You could be right,I sort of remembered your post and thought I would just tag on to it,bit rude really I suppose.
I just cannot get the hang of posting pics, when I resize them they are either too Dan big or too small and look awfully, not that I have lots of pics but do have one other.perhaps I will post that up too and I might even be able to get some more measurements.

Not rude at all, I just want it to be seen for your sake and not lost on my old post.
I don’t mind you adding more picures if easier either to this post.
