Early Medieval site, but not what I was expecting.

Post by Swany » Wed Jan 09, 2019 9:06 pm

Out with the Nox, 15" coil, permanent pasture in Scotland. Early medieval site, but nothing obvious to confirm. From the finds, it is undetected, but nothing I can see to confirm the age..

Dozens of blank coppers, lots of buttons including a leather clad one, 3 thimbles.

The site looked good on paper at least.. :-)

Lots of finds,

Anyone ID the copper, unfamiliar with that bust.

I think 3 styli or is it styluses??

2 are lead, one bronze.

So guy's any age here or am I wasting my time??

Cheers.

Those coins look very interesting but I’m afraid I can’t ID them. Hopefully someone else can ::g

Those finds, as a group look 17-18th century. But nothing wrong with that. Once you clear these bigger copper and copper alloy items you might get to earlier finds. Enjoy this site - these types of sites are fun, in my experience anyway :D

Edit - apologies I was slow - looks like you ave an ID u;@

As long as you're getting signals it's probably worth persevering. ::g

It never is.

;) That is the reply that popped into my head first. :D

Plenty of signals. I have a site that I am doing at present which has similar potential and is, as yet throwing up similar finds to yours. I remind myself that I usually dig oodles of 18th/19th century stuff for every bit of medieval. And probably a few buckets worth for every piece of celtic.
So I plod on.
Of course it depends if the older stuff is still in range.....Part of mine clearly has deep soil in places and its proving problematic for getting old stuff up. The other side of it has more rocks and this prevents stuff falling out of range.

Generally I find that the older the finds the less there are in comparison to more modern finds, so perseverance is the key. ::g

Hi Swany,
A good days digging no doubt ::g
I would be all over it :D
There’s bound to be some faint signal beauties -
In amongst all that.
I can see what might maybe be a militia button,
The one with BVV on?
What’s the lettering on the diamond shape button?
It looks interesting-as does the whole site....
Also The longer lead stylus has a good old looking patina to it ,
And the bronze stylus has potential?
Cheers

Thanks guy's, will give it another go sometime, I don't think the site has been detected based on the number of targets.

The square button appears to be clan related, I think. Hard to focus the camera.
