Silver band or ring with strange 'lettering'.

Post by stevechelt » Fri Mar 15, 2019 7:36 pm

Having become interested in detecting again after a long break I find I have a few finds from years ago which I've no idea about, I hope it is OK to post them here to see if anyone can help.

I found this in about 1989, in ploughsoil near the River Severn near Tewkesbury. Thought it was a damaged ring at first but am not sure now. In the same area I found a whole range from Roman grots, one Saxon penny, medieval hammered as well as part of a fibula, part of a Saxon stirrup and other older unidentified bits plus more recent finds of course.

One pic has a scale in cms, the others a dark background which seemed to work better for the pics. I'm almost certain it is silver, it marks paper like silver and I did the density test suspended in water with accurate scales, it comes out at 10.1. It's of fairly uniform thickness and appears to be broken at one end, but the other end looks cleanly finished, as though it is designed that way, I suspect a part is missing. There are no hallmarks, makers marks etc., all the markings are on one side, the 'inside' is plain. It weighs 1.8 gms.

The strangest thing is the 'lettering' incised on the outside. It appears rune-like but is not runes, I can't find anything like it and wonder if it is just made up faux lettering. Anyone have any idea?

Hope my image linking below works!

That is a nice find, no idea what the markings are but wouldn't be surprised if it was viking/saxon/early medieval ::g

That does look old and is very interesting. If it is silver then it is also highly likely to be treasure. If you don’t get an answer on here then show it to the FLO ::g

Very cool item. I thought the letters were runes but I’m no expert :D

No FLO when I found it in about 1989, but I did submit it for recording at the local main museum. I can't remember what was said but the recording slip is blank in the area where they would put their description, although they did give it a ref number. The same is the case for another small silver object which I'll post in a few days. Maybe they just didn't get around to writing it up on the slip.

May be best to show them to the FLO now, to get them into their current database and for another stab at identification.

Very nice, it could be Viking, as one of the runes is a Viking runic "H" a couple of the others have early viking similarities, although hard to tell as I think the images are upside down? but I can't find record of the most distinctive part, the cross ::g

Nice find though

That looks very much like a Medieval script to me. :D However the symbol on it looks Victorian so I'm wondering if this might be a Gothic Revival or an Arts and Craft style ring. :-/

That's a cross crosslet,an early Christian symbol.
End crosses supposed to represent Mathew,Mark,Luke & John.

Any idea about what the diagonal cross superimposed on it might be about?

I think Fred’s about right. The ‘script’ isn’t runic but seems like a jumble of things pagan and Christian.
You probably didn’t get a description because they didn’t have a clue either ::g
I think you’ve well passed the required time to submit it now for further scrutiny. Put it back in the drawer time :D

That's interesting. There are also a few early sceats on the PAS database with almost exactly the same cross crosslet on saltire (or plain) cross.
