Foreign coin ID made Louis XVI 12 deniers 1791-3

Post by Zyrbalax » Fri Mar 15, 2019 10:09 pm

Hi all,

I found this on my usual pasture field near Bristol. At first I thought it was a Georgian Half Penny, but cleaning it up it’s clearly not. I have had a few foreign coins from this site - 2x Napoleon III 5 centimes, 1914 Austrian 2 Heller, Louis XVI 1 Sol, Portuguese 5 Reis from late 1700’s.

Sorry no scale, I’m out of allowance for today, diameter is c. 28mm.

One side has a bust facing left, writing round the outside although I can’t make it out. I think there are also letters below the bust.

The other side again has writing round the outside, then a wreath, and the middle I can’t make out anything. I think the die axis is up/down, and I think I have both pics oriented correctly. There may be numbers bottom centre below the wreath, think I can make out 12.

Any ideas?

Many thanks

Awesome, thank you so much 🙂

Looks like the area where the date will be is pretty worn so it’s great to know this denomination was only issued 1791-1793.

Thank you A and Fred ::g ::g

Apologies for no scale, I’ll make sure to include in future.

Size measured is c. 28mm, a little smaller than minted size of 30mm I think which I guess is down to wear and corrosion over the last 200 years!

Fair play there, mate. I missed the size(28mm) in the first post. :D ::g
