Decorated Hook or Ring ?

Post by roamingrob » Sun Apr 14, 2019 11:19 am

Hi all, Going through the finds from last weekend. I have one item that looks like a hook or a damaged ringed item, it is decorated and part of it is flat on the underside .It seem to be made of a copper alloy. It was found on pasture 6"with my XP deus in Hot mode. Any ideas on use or age please

Thanks for looking ::g

Think corrosion and galvanic influence have made it like that

is it one half of one of those snake buckles that seemed popular?

Hi Dan, thanks for your comments. I have worked in the past with steel and this is not steel !
Its a copper alloy, from my past 10 years of finding hundreds of items. The item is is 32mm in diameter and weights 8g . I have taken another photo and you can see the decoration and where it ends. I know its some times hard only seeing it from a photo and its much better in your hand.

Thanks again

Hi blackadder43, not sure it has that look about it. I wondered Hook or ring brooch ? the field has been ploughed and this seems to have done battle with it. I had a lead button dated 14-1600s in the same area on the same day. A Roman camp is only half a mile away they were here for the lead mines.
Thanks ::g

what a difference a correctly exposed photo makes.

Cameras struggle on a white background unless you can manually over expose them. Most cardboard is a nice mid tone to photo against.

That looks like a rather badly knackered buckle to me. ::g

Have a look at numbers 9 and 42!

No problem Dan, and thanks Fred It could be some thing like No 9..looking more close at it now I am home for the day it has been pulled out of shape slightly..! if you look at the pattern design there is one thick bar (Line)with two slimmer bars on either side. Then slanted lines up to a broader bar on each side.Both ends are damaged ! The back is flat up to the top bar then round.With this in mind it may have had a bar like No 9 and is a buckle or a broken circle. I did look at annual brooches but all the one's I have looked at do not have a flat back. So I think Fred has cracked it.

All good stuff, and what keeps the hobby interesting for me ::g
