Is this a ring and how old do you think?

Post by tctron » Mon Apr 15, 2019 2:06 pm

Hi guys,

I found what I think (hope) is a ring.

It was found using the AT Max on custom settings discriminating against iron. It was found on pasture at about 6-8 inches deep.

I believe it is made from copper, is very small and seems to have some detail on it. The detail looks like 4 dots on top of each other followed by 3 horizontal lines, then dots, then lines and so on.

Any help on this would be greatly appreciated.

Many thanks,

James

Hi James ::g Your find appears to be a base metal/alloy finger ring with decoration/lettering to the outside circumference. Although it needs a clean to correctly identify it (the lettering ?) it would be best to submit it to your FLO before any cleaning is attempted. Regards ss47 ::g

Hi Sweepstick,

Thanks for your reply. I've had a good look at it under a loop and there doesn't seem to be lettering, instead it just has 4 dots stacked on top of each other followed by 3 raised lines. I would agree with you in saying it is definitely a base metal.

Would there be any way of putting an age on this?

Many thanks,

James

I think it would be guessing to ascribe a date to it in it's present state but if you're after my guess, it would 17th/18thC. The pattern detail will hopefully provide an approximation of date from your FLO. Good Luck and please keep us informed ::g ss47

Hi Sweepstick,

Thank you for your interest and estimate of age. Hopefully this picture can give you and anyone else an indication of what the ring patterns look like.

It looks like a 17-18th century ‘peasant’ ring. Sweet thing ::g
