I have found my 1st hammered is ID correct

Post by DingDong » Wed May 08, 2019 4:15 pm

Hi all,

found my 1st hammered yesterday a silver short cross penny. To try and ID it I used a Spink 2009 book and images on the "Coins of the UK" by Tony Clayton

I think it is Henry 11 by Oslac at Worcester mint. I base that on 2 pints
A) the three dots making the cross above the crown and the crown base (5 dots) being slightly curved)
B) the hand holding the mace being outside a perpendicular line from the left eye, whils simalr one is directly under the eye.

I cannot understand the old english letters can anyone confirm moneyer and mint from them please. I have darkened the images as I think it makes the wording clearer

Image Image

apols cam played up cld do image with scale but it 2cm wide or nearer enough 3/4""

Cheers

It's London mint, hopefully Allectus or someone else will fill in the other gaps.
It's a nice coin. Well done.

Thanks both,

quite pleased to have gotten down to Henry 11

previous finds in this field were the William and Mary 1/2 penny and farthing , a possible fibula, but based on coins I can now get use of this field back another 3-400 yrs which is encouraging.

cheers

I usually base my IDs on half a dozen large gins.

Which explains a lot.

Great find and very well done on your first hammered ::g

The reverse inscription reads:
+ OSBER.ON.LVND

LVND = lund = London
The R of Osber is pretty unreadable, but there's enough of the remainder of his name to work out the ID.

If you were unaware of it, this site by Paul Shields has good inscription deciphering info:
http://www.psdetecting.com/Inscriptions.html

Lovely coin. In 40 years detecting, believe it or not, I have never found a short cross silver hammered. You have a voided short cross.
