This was dug in Essex with a Minelab CTX. Approximately 40 mm on the longest side. Was probably round before the plow got to it. Appears to be cast brass. Would appreciate any help with this. Thanks.

I hadn't considered that because the spacing is uneven, but thanks for the input.

As above, I would suggest.
Looks like a ball bearing race on the inside and well-worn teeth on the outer.
13 teeth is a popular number for cycle free wheel races.
Below is a BMX recent version, although, if my guess is correct, it is obviously older.....

I don't see any signs of abrasion, which would likely be evident if it were a ball bearing race. I'm still thinking it is decorative, rather than functional. Thanks for your input.

First thought was the ring, top notch, that the spokes of an umbrella are attached to but not sure. Yours could be a much older variant.
Can’t find a pic of one. I’ve had a few in the past but more modern and I think they were slightly different. Just a thought :-/
This is best I could find

Likely a decorative ferrule as gear teeth are not round dome shaped. :D

Attached is a typical umbrella part from the mid 1800's. Similar in some respects, but probably would not keep the ribs in the proper positions.
