Help with ID please

Post by nalag46 » Fri Nov 15, 2019 11:00 pm

From a rough ploughed, soggy and muddy field waiting to be planted because of the rain, I have just dug up this item at about 5" deep, but have no idea what it is. The main body measures 35mm x 17mm and from body tip to end of tag is 45mm. Has anybody any idea of what this is?

I wonder if it’s something like the attached only metal.

I have tried to clean it as much as possible and can see that there are marks on the back
but can not make any sense out of it?

I have seen very similar attachments on ornate metal gate frames, very decorative, they fall off when roughly handled, the welded joints give way, Liam :;@

Maybe my imagination and poor eyesight, but is't that a horse and rider in the centre of the pattern? If so it could be a bit of horse / harness 'bling'.

As Lowland asked - are there clear marks on the back (which might or might not suggest modern-ish) or is it something more interesting? There are all sorts of motifs going on on the face and the patina suggests it is of some age... one for the FLO?

And it's an Arab horse judging by the tail and its trotting gait :)

And does the rider have wings, or a flowing cape behind him/her....

Maybe I need another drink.

Yes, it's definitely a horse and rider (rider has wings on). It's unusual and comes from a field where stuff from all ages (roman, saxon and medieval) has been dug up in good numbers. I will visit my FLO next week and see what he has to say. Thank you all for your interest and feedback.
