2nd dig finds

Post by Samwhite » Sat Nov 16, 2019 10:13 am

Hi guys I went out on my 2nd ever dig this morning on my permission which is pasture . After 5 minutes I had my 1st signal on my ace 150 and dug up a crotal bell about 4 inches deep not sure of age so if anyone has any ideas please let me know. I would love to find out. Then I found a tiny button about 3 inches down. Also I had a great signal and just under the clump about 4 inches in I found what at 1st I thought was a spoon handle but now not sure what it is so any help would be great. Last of all was a little bit of furniture I think. Great to hear your thoughts. I was really happy with my 2nd dig and can't wait to get out again...

I’d say the crotal bell was a later one - probably 19th century ::g

Possibly but the ground conditions look like they are particularly harsh on copper based alloys.

After looking at the long thin object I've come to the conclusion that it's a break leaver off a child's bicycle. I could be wrong but I'm well happy with the crotal bell.

I was basing the dating on the large size of the holes, the square and very uniform suspension loop, the higher copper content of the body material (earlier ones have a higher tin content that doesn’t corrode like this one) and the proportions which are just not as elegant as the earlier ones.

The lack of any decoration is, I believe, not down to corrosion but that can’t be discounted ::g So I guess it could be as early as 18th century, but for the reasons above I doubt it :)

Thanks for the help ox girl. It made my day finding the crotal bell. I've seen them being found on lots of YouTube videos and when I found one on my 2nd dig I was over the moon. Itching to get out again next weekend to see what else I can dig up. 👍 👍
