Fancy a challenge? - I have no idea.

Post by TheAndyA » Sun Dec 01, 2019 6:33 pm

I found this today on a new permission and it was from what is now a grass Paddock. The land is up on the hills and the soil is quite sandy and there's a lot of stones under the earth.

I was using the Equinox in Field 2 and this gave a 19 - 21 signal. The item for 4 or 5 inches deep .

After detecting and then chatting with the land owner, I was told that some time ago a de-stonening machine had been over the land. I wish I'd known that sooner.

The 'thing' has a fair bit of weight to it. There used to be a Roman settlement around 1/2 a mile away (I'm not suggesting that this is Roman, but thought it worth mentioning). The only other finds of note from the day are a George II Farthing from an adjoining field and what may be a Medieval - Post Medieval Dress Hook.

Thanks for having a look. ::g

Just for once I thought I’d beaten the rest to it. We must have pressed the button at the same time :D

Same conclusion, a finial, maybe a torch, off what ?

I'd go with the finial but something says primitive plumb bob, however no hole to attach string.

I'm no good at this finds identification type stuff! lol!- but the first thing I thought is that it looks like it could be used to seal a bottle!- so maybe an old style perfume bottle cap?. I think I've seen similar looking examples in the past somewhere.

I think a finial of some sort too but the shape possibly looks like a Tudor or Stuart lady? :D

I thought it was a spoon terminal too.....until I clocked the size. At 30mm(if those squares are 10mm?) it's far too large!

Thanks Fred and alloverover. It's blooming frustrating, I can see some sort of shape to it, but not enough detail to figure out what.

Allectus, yes they're 10mm squares. I've just weighed it and it's 41 grams.

Edit: It's around 4.5 cm long and 2.5 cm wide.

To be fair when I saw the link from Ladybird66, I thought that was it, but now that I've had another look using my PC I'm having some doubts. There are some similarities though.

I'm half tempted to zap it, just to see if that'll reveal any detail beneath the crud, but that might destroy it too. x;

On the edge of yours does it look like it had something broke off ? Mine has. I think they look no to far apart when you put them side by side

Hi roamingrob, I've had it under a magnifying glass and a lamp and I can't really see anything that might show a break. I've just taken a bit of video using the magnifying lens. :-/
