Is this my first Roman artifact ?
Hello everyone,
Had this item up a week ago and I can’t seem to find any likeness anywhere.
It’s a copper alloy, found at about 10inch on a field that has generally yielded Roman at these depths.
Found up north next to a Roman Fort. Lancashire
Only 20mins earlier did a dupondius come up not far away
by a friend of mine and to this group.
He’s put me onto this forum and this is my first post.
Liking what I’m seeing so far, thanks.

Hello sillywizard82, As you've mentioned here that you're a newcomer to the resource, here's another warm welcome aboard the forum Should it be required, a browse of the blue panel entries on the left should bring you up to date with both recent and earlier detecting topics discussed by members.
Unfortunately, I can't add anything approaching an ID of your find other than it appears to possibly be some kind of hook/hangar arrangement with the remains of a flange for mounting?
Enjoy your browsing and your time here in the MDF community.
Good Luck. Regards Eric

It looks like iron, is it magnetic?
If it is difficult you are doing it wrong

A magnet test is a must. Detector IDs can be fooled at times.sillywizard82 wrote: Fri Jan 10, 2025 9:35 am It’s definitely a copper alloy, no iron profile with detector.

Tried with a strong magnet and it ain’t sticking my friends. Agree that it looks like iron.
It’s a strange one… love to ID it.
Thanks everyone for taking the time to have a look.

I'd also think part of the loop on the side of a pot of some sort but there are plenty of other things that it could be. I fear that you are unlikely to be able to date it with any certainty.
When I first saw this it looked like the back of one of these it's Roman Hippo Sandal a type of temporary Roman horse shoe and are apparently very rare this nearly ended up in the ditch as rubbish but something intrigued me about out and a detecting friend said lucky you kept it and gave me the ID hopefully you can see why I thought it might be a part of one

Our new friend I can tell you folks is a bit of a wizard with those Roman coins and also a throughly decent chap too.
And a recent recovery of which im totally not jealous of particularly is I think a little bit special from the same field this item came from and the dupondius mentioned above. its a republican denarius but f it's what I think it is, I can't think of seeing a coin that ancient on this forum. Which is saying something.
If so would pre date the forts construction by over 200 years.
