Queen Elizabeth Sixpence but not Silver ? Forgery ?
Please could I have some advice on this find please. It looks like a Queen Elizabeth I sixpence, however it is not silver, maybe copper/bronze, not magnetic so not iron. Wondering if it is a Tudor forgery. Has a crescent mint mark and maybe 1587.
Thank you for any expert advice as quite new to all this.

It might just need a good clean, or as a certain members says give it a zap.

As above, I think that is silver. I have a permission where the hammered often have that orange tarnish ![ThumbsUp [81/]](./images/smilies/81_EmoticonsHDcom.png)

It refers to electrolysis. If you type that into the search function or look in the blue banner on the left in the cleaning section, there will be a few threads there.Jennylamb wrote: Tue Mar 11, 2025 8:30 pm Could I ask how you would clean it without damaging, was wondering what the zapping is.![]()

Spit (or table salt solution) and aluminium foil is a simple and effective alternative to electrolysis, just make a parcel and give it a gentle rub, if you feel it getting warm and can smell rotten eggs its working. Keep checking it and giving it a rinse under running water and a gentle brushing with a tooth brush and it will come up nicely ![ThumbsUp [81/]](./images/smilies/81_EmoticonsHDcom.png)

If you do zap it take it nice and easy. Give it a little bit and check then maybe a bit more. It works well but I have messed up some coins doing it still that is the way you learn. Whack up a pic when cleaned would be good to see. Good luck...... ![ThumbsUp [81/]](./images/smilies/81_EmoticonsHDcom.png)

Olive oil should never be used on coins or other finds! It may seem to work but does more long term damage than good.Chalky14 wrote: Tue Mar 11, 2025 10:46 pmIf you don’t want to zap it try soaking in olive oil and lemon juice mixture to soften the crust. It’s worked on a few of mine.

Before and after images of a denarii I found a few years back. As I recall, an hour or 2 of electrolysis and all the crud fell off.
