What was this?

Post by Easylife » Sat Jun 17, 2017 9:00 pm

Found on pasture. The previous plowing chopped it in half. Made of lead and It appears to be missing it's hinged lid. It has moulded protrusions on the hinge side and the neck is narrower. Not too old, It has a registered patent No. 387733, which I guess is UK maybe about 1900 ish. Difficult to look patent up, that would tell all. But what was it a model of and it's use? A churn shaped vesta case?

I think that it might be a tad small for a Vesta case. I am wondering whether it might be a needle box instead. These sometimes held a spool or two of thread and a thimble as well as pins and needles. :-/

Thanks Fred, Maybe needles, but no room for a thread or thimble. The top opening is very much narrower than it's base being just 5mm wide by 20mm long. I do not know where to find the patent record.

Have had a look for the design No 387733.
Design No is registered to;
John Henry Gartside & Co Ltd,
54 Fountain Street,
Manchester,
Lancs.

Subject; Prints
Class 10; Printed Fabrics
Register BT44/27
Information from National Archives Kew.

Now this refers to fabric and you have a metal item :-/ .
Has a mistake been made in another item being given the design No or did Gartside just use this on something else they had ?
Fred may be on the right lines. Perhaps the needlebox was covered in that particular fabric on the design No.
Cheers ::g
Dave.

It looks a bit coffee pot like, but no handle.

To me it looks more like an animal's head, a dog?

I did see that but also thought it was for something else. A logical connection though. ::g
