Possible Silver Brooch? Found In Salford
Possible Silver Brooch? Found In Salford
Hi all,
Just thought I would share with you all a find from this afternoon. I found it right next to the River Irwell in Salford, about 4 inches down in a sandbank (dry).
I had the Garrett AT Pro and it came up as 58 - 60 on the target ID (settings - Pro mode and zero discrimination).
It looks like a brooch and is maybe silver but there are no markings that I can see.
The attachments for the pin are there but the actual pin is missing.
Its quite beaten up, but beautiful at the same time, very delicate.
It was upside down in the sand, thought it was an attachment for a drill used for grinding at first!!
Does anyone know anything with regards to possible age or design?
The river floods regularly and the sand is around 3 feet above water level.
Thank you

Pretty modern type of brooch made in the last 50 of so years. Better find than a drinks can which is all i usually find in my local river.

It's a Victorian filigree brooch. Late 19th century. Highly likely to be silver - have you tried the spit and foil test?
Good find

Re: Possible Silver Brooch? Found In Salford
Yes I agree. Likely to be silver. My dad brought a brooch made in the same way (but in the shape of a butterfly) back from Cairo when he was serving there during the War.
It was silver and I used to clean it with a soft toothbrush because it was prone to tarnishing. It was made in a workshop in the Bazaar. It wasn't hallmarked and was probably quite low-grade silver but silver nevertheless.
So, Late Vicky or Edwardian and on into the 40's and 50's.

Thank you everyone for your replies,
Even though the brooch looks like its been going down the river for best part of its life, It still fascinates me as to who wore it and how they came to sadly losing it. This is what I love about the hobby, everything you dig had a story behind it.
Nearby on the river, about 2 years ago, I found an old 1910 penny and a bit further up the banking a small brass plate which appeared like nothing at first, however upon closer inspection it appeared to be from an old engine or car.
I googled the info and numbers on the plate and up popped an old sales brochure from 1927 for a London car showroom, and pretty expensive cars for sale!
I will post a photo of the plate later on, along with how I found it.
Thanks again every one!
