I was at a rally near felixstowe in suffolk organised by the rotary club. i was using my deus xp hadnt found much apart from an old toy pistol. i had a great signal and I was being asked about the hobby by the farmer wife and friend. they watched me dig it up and I thought it was a piece of lead at first. when I got home and had a closer look I thought it might be a piece of hack silver so I took it to my club east coast searchers and a very experienced member looked though his money eyer at it and said it was base 9ct gold ingot viking possibly roman or celtic. i think when he weighed it it was the same weight as either 2 or 2.5 staters 10.?? grams. the consensus at the club was that it was a 9th century viking ingot. awaiting for further news as it is in the treasure trove process.

Wow, how easy it would have been to toss it in the bin thinking it was lead. Wonder if there is any more in the same spot :-/ :D

Great story! I bet that will get a few folks rummaging through their scrap 'lead'!
Wonder what else awaits discovery there.
