Curse or Love tablet Tablet?

Post by Steve_T » Thu Sep 28, 2017 9:34 pm

Hi all

Your thoughts would be appreciated on what it may be

I think this might be a curse tablet, or perhaps.............from some a little research I have done is it a tablet used for a love spell? placed inside the home of the desired person to gain their affections
The romantic in me sways me towards that possibility, I don't want to open it until the FLO has seen it and see if he wants to open it up.

the first image has a design in each corner and the middle that has been stamped in and left an impression of what looks like a flower head although crude, it has 2 folds which would make it 3 times the size, quite large and thick as curse tablets go looking in the PAS

This came from a new permission that has produced 2 roman coins and part of a roman bracelet in a short period that was spent at the weekend, it has a roman road (not scheduled) running through it so is looking promising.

Had an Elizabeth I Groat, 2 George III Penny's and a nice Cartwheel Penny, and Irish Halfpenny all easily ID'd as in good condition and a couple of medieval buckles and loads of buttons.

I only have a short period of time to spend on it, once seeded its a no dig site

This is likely getting a beautifully wrapped present - wonderful thing ::g Desperate to know what is inside too and really hope firstly there is something, and secondly it is less curse and more on the love side. Will watch with interest :D

If only the stuff that we find could talk eh?

It reminds me more of a home made trade weight so exactly what it weighs would be useful to know. As far as I could see there is only one similar one on the PAS database and that is undecorated. The design on yours very much reminds me of the counterstamps often found on late 17thC and early 18thC worn silver coins.

If it is not a weight then might also enclose something. I have heard of low value coins being found inside similar objects. Odds are that your FLO will say leave it as it is but I expect (hope :D ) that your curiousity will probably get the better of you anyway! :D

PS As an aside while I was looking at the supposed 'curse' tablets on the PAS database it struck me how similar some of them are to the chocks or bungs traditionally (and still) used to fit lead flashing into brickwork! Possibly whoops! :D

I know what you mean Fred, I've found some of those lead pieces with iron stil in them, obviously used for mounting a hinge or a hook in stonework. On top of old walls they used to mound iron railings in the stonework and pour molten lead to secure them.

I might open it when it after its gone through the PAS, I'm curious to see what may be in there, as to age.............could be modern too and not Roman

It obviously has some decent age to it but not yet convinced that it is Roman. ::g

Intriguing find. Lead finds are probably the biggest enigma in the hobby. Used (and re-used) for countless purposes for thousands of years. As well as for making artifacts like seals, it was the all-purpose DIY material. Putty, polyfilla, glue and mastic .
I find the neatness of it interesting. It is done with great care. If it were simply a home-made weight I doubt it would be the case...not to this extent anyway.
The analogy used by OG is very apt I feel on a number of levels. It does look like it is wrapping something. It also fits because it could hold a secret inside. On the other hand there is something beautiful about a wrapped present, the whole idea of secret promise inside that it becomes sometimes bitter-sweet to open it. (I always love Christmas Eve when the presents are still beautiful and wrapped under the tree, no matter what goodies they might contain.)

So I suppose I am in two minds about the whole 'open it' thing. :)

Whatever it is I don't think it contains a curse. Why have pretty flowers on a curse?

Hi
What a fascinating find

When it comes to opening lead items that are this tightly folded is it just a case of gently and slowly?
Is wd40 usable?
Or warm it a bit?
Cheers!

It all depends upon what state it's in.

The lead on this one seems pretty sound so just warm it up in an oven and gently lever it apart using smooth wood or hard plastic tools to avoid scratching. If the lead had cystalised or decayed then it might not be possible to open it without breaking it up. ::g

Just got this back today after being recorded....

A probable post medieval lead unidentified object dating to the period AD 1500-1700. The weight measures 32.78mm in length and 32.05mm in width, is 7.63mm thick and weighs 56.44g.

Do I open it to see if anything is in side or leave it as is??

Regards Steve

Is the middle pattern repeated on the left top and bottom?
If so, something must be sealed inside... surely?
