ID of pointy iron thing, any ideas?

Post by chrisbham » Thu Dec 14, 2017 1:58 pm

Hi all,

Been sorting out the old scrap bag bits and found this. Scrap or no scrap, ideas?

It's iron and was a orange blob when found. I soaked it in olive oil for a month or so then let it completed dry out for another while, and today when touching it the orange bits crumbled away revealing this. I assumed it was a big round nail or scrap iron when found but without the crud it looks like it was something that had a hole in one end.

Found with a garret euroace on stubble, about 4" down.

Cheers, Chris

Looks like it could have once been a spanner? I guess agricultural machinery needed to be repaired in the field.

That was my first thought too, but it's only the size of my index finger so seems too small. You're both likely right tho! ::g

Think a small spanner. Pic not the same, but a lot of these vintage tools were home made. I have a friend who turns/forges all his tools using kit from his grandfather

It looks like a fossilised eel to me, but I don't expect that will help much 8-| .

We used to live in a house in London that backed onto the river Crane. When we had spare time we would pull out lots of weeds from the river, watch the elvers wriggle out, and collect them. We didn't eat them though , we had a small terrapin in a fish tank who did , used to go wild chasing them about. We are going to end up talking about haggis at this rate, not a good idea, I've seen this sort of conversation before 8-| .

Could it be part of a door brace / bracket (a small door). Can't quite see if there are holes along the shaft bit for nails or screws - it's probably a spanner but thought I drop that hat in the ring.

Spanner seems likely, but just to be difficult - could it be that the open end was originally closed and this was part of some sort of blade or flail?

It does look like it's meant to be open ended, but here's a pic showing the scale anyhoo

Haha funny you should say that, I did find a meccano piece in the same field. When it came out I thought I had a coin clump of about 4 coins, I was gutted!
