Lead artefact for ID

Post by gixer08 » Tue Feb 13, 2018 8:22 am

I'm guessing a lead weight but with no hole I'm lost as to it's original purpose. Anyone else came across anything similar or could shed a bit of light on it would be greatly appreciated

Could be a curse tablet or tablet for a love spell, or maybe just a folded bit if lead

You would have to unfold to see what's inside if anything, some say it releases bad luck, if a love spell could be something of the intended person for the spell

If none of the above its a few pennies worth of scrap, there's some info on the web I found a while ago, have a look and see what you believe.

I will have look myself later, at work ATM waiting for my 2 PC's and 4 screens to fire up

Regards Steve

Many thanks Steve for the info ,
I'm intrigued now but not sure I would want to release any bad luck by opening it :-/

Ah the mystery folded lead...
What other age of finds are coming out of the area?
It’s certainly tightly folded and with a good white patina.
I’ve unfolded at least four pretty similar bits
Turned out they were all
Just folded bits of lead :D
But who knows....
Cheers

Thanks for the link Steve ,
Interesting wee read that.
As we don't have PAS over here in the north of Ireland do you think I should attempt to open it or would it be worthwhile getting in touch with the Museum first to see if they were interested in it

It could well have a hammered inside ... one of our members found one very similar in the scrap bucket ... opened the thing to reveal an amazing mammered ... I can get the PAS link if anyone is interested.

i've got the link ... and its purely amazing ... more than a chance in a life time ...
scrap bucket put out at dig, piece of folded lead chucked into said bucket ... and that would be it .. or would it??? that is until some incredibly lucky person opened the lead to reveal a real treasure inside... How many upvotes should I expect before sharing the amazing link ... and i mean AMAZING!!! I would love upvotes to improve my popularity index .. ::g ::g ::g
Its not everyday I can share such an amazing and inspiring piece of luck. You seriously have to see the PAS report.

I bet some idle hand just folded their halfgroat up in the lead strip. Then later, maybe after a beer of three found a bit of scrap lead in their pocket and discarded it. :))
It was good but not that good OA, though a seriously lesson. I will have to check all my plain folded bits of scrap lead now, though they would all get another vetting before getting recycled. :D

obviously a hard man to impress..
1. someone finds the thing
2. person discards it
3. someone investigates the scrap bucket
4. person investigates a folded piece of lead ... who would normally do that???
5. BINGO and the rest is in the PAS report...
How often would that happen? and a brilliant coin too.

It would be interesting to know why they actually placed the coin in the little lead time capsule and how common a custom it was. I hate to think how many great artefacts are discarded by newbies not realising what they are. A friend when a newbie was going to discard their scrap when someone recognized his BA spear tip. :D

I can imagine that there are those who might think a spearhead is a piece of scrap
though I am more likely to think that a piece of scrap is a spearhead..
What can be deduced from that?

That it is better to err on the side of caution when in doubt!
But a spearhead would no doubt be a bit more obvious if wrapped in lead. :))
