Couple of Wensleydale bits

Post by katie82 » Tue Feb 13, 2018 4:30 pm

Hi all,

Trying to ID a couple of bits. The bottom pics we couldn't decide if it's art nouveau or really old...!

The first is very heavy, lead-type, perhaps some sort of loom weight, though it looks like a lid?

Thanks in advance!

Katie

Hello 'Katie82', It's difficult to tell from the pics but the lead item is probably some form of weight (difficult to come up with it's use). The depiction of a face is equally hard to identify it's use but suggestions include gravestone furniture :-O or possibly a decoration on rainwater goods
ie (guttering down-pipes/hopper heads. Good Luck ::g

The two triangles in the top corners of the face artifact give it an art nouveau feel. But the face itself looks South East Asian or oriental to me.

I think that we also need to consider hair style when trying to attribute origin/ethnicity.

She reminds me of Medusa. My first thought was early 20th Century touch plate from a door, or a lock panel. Found some lovely old spindlewhorls nearby, much easier to figure out!

Possibly a roman lead bowl?

Earlier replies suggest it's modern and from the pics I'd agree. I initially thought it was a brass finger plate from a door but these were usually (though not always) pressed and this looks to have a solid back.

without handling them I would say both are Roman. Lead bowl and image of Lucifer the bringer of light. could be from a shrine nearby. Obviously the field hasn't been detected much but have you had any more Roman stuff off it, like small rolls of lead perhaps? is it by water? if you haven't had many small items maybe there's lots of iron around, you could try adjusting your settings.
