5 hammies From today And a Saxon wulfred penny

Post by Me and my boy » Sun Feb 18, 2018 8:31 pm

I found these this afternoon after a good week without a hammy then five come along at once. I do realise I’m a very lucky so and so to be getting so many In one 1.5hr session.
Love the Groat as it sounded like a Vicky penny or musket ball it rang so loud and I didn’t expect to see it pop out. The other broken ones and quarters etc were shallow and one hatter even laying on the surface of the ploughed soil. The weird one was shallow and sounded all most like it should leave digging it, but glad I did, whatever it is?

That is truly amazing. I didn't even know that Saxons made that sort of coin! :D Ah I see, it's a clipped or chipped down full size silver penny? rl;

Cheers Fred, I also didn’t think to look for just the centre of a coin.

The Wulfred (and very nice it is, too) may or may not have been deliberately clipped, but coins of this style (broadly Anglo-Saxon in period) often seem to crumble away naturally around the outer circle over the centuries. They tended to be struck very deep on the peripheral inscription portion, leaving only a thin and rather fragile substrate of connective tissue.

Cheers Barry, I was wondering if they are susceptible to braking as I’ve seen lots like it with broken edges, I maybe think also they were sometimes debased with tin etc making them more fragile. It’s funny that mine and the one I’ve found are both broken the same way.
Ps I’ll swap for yours in your avatar.

My Æthelstan was almost unprecedentedly well preserved (graded "virtually as struck", indeed), but I left it with Spink last week, and it'll be in their sale on 27/28 March. (They even said they're thinking of putting it on the cover of the catalogue, which is rather exciting.)

Here's my only other Anglo-Saxon coin find to date, in an even more distressed condition than your Wulfred:

You Æthelstan is a seriously impressive find. I was only joking on the swap. You wouldn’t any my chipped old toot anyway.

Hey, I'll take a nice bit of toot wherever I can find it. And coins like this are rare enough in any condition, so always deeply thrilling to find.
